I have long advocated that internet communication is bad for our society. Without face to face contact it is easy to forget you are speaking to humans with feelings. You say things you wouldn't say in person. You step over boundaries you would not over step in person. You get carried away, because it is easy.

I apologize for being out of line today, and hope my apology is accepted. You know who you are.

Have no clue...but ditto the other two posts. I often say the SAME thing I'd say in person and without facial expression etc. ...when I read it (after posted) I think, "I hope they took that as I meant it and not offensively". I can come off as dry and sarcastic when I think I'm being humorous. Typing/internet is hard to convey....oth

just had one of those "team" meetings at work today. talked about communication. for a face to face we were told non-verbal (body language) 50+%, para-verbal (inflection) ~40%, verbal(what you actually say) 7%. no wonder we don't get it. we just don't get (nor can we communicate) those nod, nod, wink, wink know what i mean

No kidding.
Then when it blows up in your face you feel like crap because you can't resolve it the way you can in real life.
Bumabu is right. It sucks.

I did not read what you wrote but I have also wrote things that I wish I could take back. The internet is hard to express your real meaning sometimes.

its ok to write one...just wait 24 hours before you actually send it.

a nice cool off/review period.

You'll never take this advice, Bro:)
If you got something to say, lay it on them immediately just like a UFC counter punch!!!
Oh yeah!! Heh, heh, heh.

i DID say "recently".

I do that AND I sometimes put my draft in front of some trusted editors. I come back and try to see the other person's POV and acknowledge it even if we still disagree. Sometimes the internet is a blessing and issues can be resolved in writing that would just "stew" otherwise. And yes, sometimes it's a curse when you can't guarantee how your words are interpreted.

Add to that the fact that internet text doesn't convey any emotion, leaving the reader to assign their own perceptions to the author, which may not be correct. So a joking or innocent comment can easily be taken as a serious insult when it wasn't authored that way.

A sticky situation to be sure.

I will join you in apologizing to any I have offended. Life is too short to be upset over text on a screen, so I don't hold grudges and hope others are the same way. We're here for fun, no reason to let misunderstandings or off moments change that.

bumabu,
A great observation and well stated. I know I am helped by typing so darn slow, it kind of falls into kanoes tip.

Maybe that is what people said about the first cave drawings or inscriptions. Some things or people change, some don't.

We do need a official "sarcasm" font.

How about just saying "Sorry, just joking- meant no harm" one time after someone takes offense to something you've posted that you meant as sarcasm rather than multiple nasty posts strongly defending your original post and continuing to offend others in the process. Everyone makes mistakes. Some people learn from them.

Yeah, it's something I learned later in life than I should have. You don't have to be wrong to say "I'm sorry". And it's usually best to keep it as simple as gutmon put it.

The flip side of the conversation is that many people sanitize their posts out of fear of offending someone. There is also a group opinion that follows a concensous. People don't want to step out of line so they agree or takes sides with people just to keep an even keel. I think it's important to speak your mind and be honest with your opinions even if you are in the minority.

If you read my posts, you know I am in your face much of the time. The BWCA is my heart and soul and I have very strong opinions about the place.

unlike the car which provides a shield and escape route for the middle finger, at least the internet provides a way for those to reconnect and own up to thier offensive statements.

my name is fisher and i too am an offense-a-holic.

07/10/2010 01:14PM
there are two "official" ways to state sarcasm in internet text;

the font= ;) aka wink and smile
the statement= include "just sayin" and apparently you can say anything!

example, you guys are catering to a bunch of softies with these heartfelt apologies for slightly offensive statements.cute gentleman.

just sayin ;)

That's a great idea. In 24 hours I can think up something a LOT NASTIER than I can just off the cuff!

I actually offend a lot more people in person than I do on line.

I think it's safe to say that at one time or another all of us have written things that we wish we hadn't or that were misunderstood and
caused feathers to ruffle, but that is one of the things that I find attractive about this board. We can write something knowing we will get immediate feedback, good, bad, or indifferent, and then have the chance to explain, apologize, or whatever seems appropriate, and we move on. When I was involved in EMS,one of the things we always told prospective new members for the ambulance crew was that we were much like a big family, dysfunctional at times but family none the less. I think the same could be said of the members of this forum. We don't always agree on some things, but overall there is a lot of respect shown for diverse opinions. Wouldn't it be boring if no-one ever disagreed?

The problem is no longer a concern. The fellow formerly known as Prince has released the news that The Internet is dead.
