I have a dog that I'm training for hiking and the BWCA... no pictures yet. Where do you keep your dog(s) at night? I have a two man tent so if he gets wet I too will end up with a wet sleeping quarters. Or is this a separate blog?

the Canoe Dogs on Brule. Amee the brown retriever mix is 15 and still hops into her place at my feet in the stern. Emily, the collie is 2 and was out on her first BW trip.we worked her up to it with trips around the local lakes. smart dog,she caught on fast and settled into the bow with my wife.we try and keep them out of the lake after dinner and on a easy trip like Brule we can take extra blankets for them to lay on in the tent with us.Amee is sort of laid back but Emily does the chipmunk chase and wants a close up look at the Spruce Grouse that come around the camp.we don't plan on any long trips with them,Brule is just right because it's sort of "drive in" canoe camping.
it's just a level trail thru the woods.

Sleeps right in the tent, ticks and all. Even if I had an eight person tent she would still sleep right next to me.

So happy to see there are plenty others out there who cannot leave home without their 4 legged family members! We are bringing 2 dogs on a trip next week and have received a lot of flack about it, despite the fact they are well behaved and obedience trained. My boyfriend has always had dogs on his trips to the Quetico/BW and has never once had a problem. No pictures yet of them on a trip, but here is one of my big guy who will be experiencing his first time in the "real" wilderness. Picture taken on Bear Island Lake in Ely. Ok, had to go back and edit to include a pic of my older girl so she doesn't feel left out :-)

quote kanoes: "for you canoe dog people...what do you feel the optimal size/weight would be for a tripping dog?"
Big enough to carry a dog pack, yet small enough to jump into the canoe.

Not very good in a canoe has to be right on me at ALL times. She hates when I get the canoe and packs out. If its aluminium she goes nuts, knows it a local trip and shes going, if its kevlar she mopes around. Kiya is much bigger now but I love this picture.

At the beach campsite off of Williamson Island on Lake Insula. Lucky is on the left and Cinnamon is the reason we got Lucky (because Cinnamon is the best dog ever!). Cinnamon is now 10 and had to have an emergency splenectomy this spring. Burst spleen diagnosed as fibrohistiocystic nodule, grade III. Emergency room vet doesn't give her long but we're holding out hope for one more trip.

So, assuming you love taking your dog with you and knowing that some day he will pass, would you take the ashes up there and bury them at your favorite campsite? And, if you did, would it tick you off to find that campsite taken when you returned? I know, it's a goofy question but until I get a job that's all I got!

Maybe it's just 12 days away from technology (or the beers that taste so good after being gone), but I can't figure out how to post more than one picture at a time and we have so many great pics of the dawgs on their first trip! Hate to clog up the thread with numerous posts, so here is just one our Berner Jake who carried at least 20 pounds in his own pack at all times. As their food lessened the more of our stuff he could carry, bonus :-) So proud of how well both dogs did for their fist trip (one dog is almost 11 years old), and can't imagine doing a trip without them. Made me feel a little more safe when seeing fresh blueberry bear scat at camp the second to last morning :-)

quote nojobro: "I'm allergic. My poor family; they want a dog soooo much. "
My son is allergic to dogs and cats and he so wanted a dog. Back in 2006 we found a dog that he wasn't allergic to, a Multipoo(maltese/poodle mix)sp? I've always liked the big dogs. In the past we had Malamutes and Shepards and I was convinced I wouldn't like a small dog. I gave in and we got frisky for my son.
The whole family couldn't be happier or more in love with this dog. I guess it's just about impossible not to love a dog. He reminds me of a polar bear cub.

This little girl (who just made her first trip at 10 1/2 years old and did FANTASTIC) goes everywhere with me, and a part of her always will. Not sure if she'll be around for our next trip 4 years from now but if she's not, some of her ashes will join us. Thought about spreading some them on each of our favorite camp sites - her name is "Karma" and she would bring good Karma to all who visited - whether it's us or a fellow paddler!
