At least 10 years ago now, three of my close buddies and I did a combination trip of paddling and backpacking. Two of us started paddling from Gunflint Lake, carrying most of the food and equipment, ...and two set out hiking the Border Route Trail going east, carrying their sleeping bags, pads and a tent in case something happened and they would have to spend the night short of the designated campsite. Continuing east this way, we would shift partners and the means of travel (alternating between hiking and paddling, etc.) and would meet up each day in an agreed upon campsite that bordered both the water and the Border Route Trail. Our final take out was at McFarland Lake on far east end of the BWCA. It was a really fun and unique experience.

Any of you out there ever do something similar to this?

That sounds cool. How far was it and how long did it take?

There is a story in a Boundary WatersJournal issue of 2 guys who hike the Border Trail and then fly into Nym and Paddle back to Saganaga.

How do permits work in a case like that? Sounds like fun for all if you are compatible gear wise...

Never done a 'surf and turf', but every fall we try to hit the overlap of the opening of grouse season and the closing of trout season here in Michigan. We call it the 'cast and blast'.

Never considered it, but my wife and I truly enjoy both and would certainly give it a try if we found others interested in this type of adventure.
