I am mostly an ‘east sider’ so I usually turn the radio off once I leave hwy 61 or there abouts. And it usually takes me till about duluth on the way home till I realize that I havent turned it back on. But silence the whole way….i like to sing along way too much for that.

05/25/2010 10:54AM
nope.. my finger slipped on send too quick!! I really am just fishing for more good music ideas.

05/25/2010 11:17AM
I have an album called "CanoeSongs" that I love for the way up. Also "Anter Bear Kazoo" which has songs all about the north shore and Isle Royale. (Kids songs on that one but I like it anyway.)

It really depends on who I am with, I am not very picky when it comes to the music. Some favorites would be CCR, Seger, Sublime, audioslave, darius rucker, anything by carrie underwood, zac brown band, anything that is good that is on the radio. Once I get close I like to turn off the radio and just here the wind.

I am going to take a solo this fall so I will get to indulge myself a little with some guilty pleasures….i wont mention what they are, only my wife know – cause she catches me singing along sometimes!

I have a list that I want to put together for my solo on June 20th.

John Butler trio
Gnarls Barkley
Edie Vedder's Into the Wild soundtrack
Pearl Jam
Johnny Cash

And still working on more

05/25/2010 11:46AM
Audio books for me, all the way up when I am the only one in the car. When I am driving with others, I create a mix of music that will stick in people's heads. Cruel, but funny to me.

05/25/2010 11:47AM
Bob Dylan- Blood on the Tracks
Buena Vista Social Club-
Sufjan Stevens- Come on Feel the Illinoise!
Joni Mitchell- Court and Spark
Crosby, Stills and Nash-
David Grisman and Jerry Garcia- Shady Grove
Dave Brubeck- The Essence of Dave Brubeck
Edith Piaf- Eternalle
Dave Matthes Band-The Gorge
Paul Simon- Graceland
Toots and the Maytals- Funky Kingston

are we there yet?.....

05/25/2010 12:13PM
For the drive up before a canoe trip I'd start with some Allman Brothers and Santana, then maybe mix in some Jethro Tull and Moody Blues, and maybe cap it with some Willie Nelson.

For whatever reason (besides the simple fact that it just rocks) Weezer's Blue Album is required listening on the way to or from the Boundary Waters for me and my friends. Although last year we expanded somewhat; on our way back from a particularly significant trip to Knife Lake, four of us sang, from beginning to end, Neutral Milk Hotel's "Aeroplane over the Sea."

While just a few years ago I would have despised myself for liking them, I'm now old enough that I like sensitive folk music like the Great Lake Swimmers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ6W_cq-zQ0

I used to be a techno phobe, but the incredible joy of having ALL my music (~ 15,000 songs) in my hand was too much to resist.

5,000 songs, but we usually roll with "Into the Wild" soundtrack and some classic rock. Clapton, Hendrix, the Stones. And perhaps the most influential artist of all time.... Eddie Money!

05/25/2010 03:21PM
I've got a long drive. Led Zeppelin, ZZTop, Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Guess Who, Doors, Allman Brothers, Clapton, Jeff Beck, Beatles, Yo Yo Ma, Dylan, CSNY, Mellencamp, Metallica, Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Bonamassa, Hendrix, The Kooks, Satriani, Robert Plant, Gov't Mule, Rush, Joplin, Moreland & Arbuckle, Guns & Roses, Cream, and...

Wow lots of good music on this Board
My playlist this year may be something like this.
Govt. Mule- Red Rocks 2008 for starters
Allman Bros - 3-19-09 with Eric Clapton (Allman , Trucks, Haynes, and Clapton) wow
David Byrne
PHISH!! Maby Alpine 98
Some Jerry.. My favorite is Garcia/Khan 5-05-1982 Oregon State Prison
Others would include Marley, Ben Harper, The Black Crows, Dr. John, The Neville Bros, some Jimmi Buffet, Willie Nelson, Mels Saunders, Panic and Cheese, Railroad Earth, Ray Charles, the Waybacks, and Some Yonder Mtn.

Wow I can't wait for the drive up =D

05/25/2010 09:11PM
Was at Phish Alpine 98 (if that was the Led Zepp Ramble On opener and Been Caught Steelin' encore)! BEST show ever and my first Phish show.

Railroad Earth is GREAT if you haven't checked them out, please do. Waybacks, good stuff, Leftover Salmon, Dead, Beatles...

If you have not listened to Trampled by Turtles, PLEASE DO. They are a Duluth band. Some would not call them bluegrass because they expand a bit beyond traditional bluegrass but I love them! TBT, check them out.

I'm with Soledad, I love to find a good audiobook and listen to a compelling novel while watching the miles roll by. I'll be tripping with my dad this year and I'm not sure how excited he'll be to listen, of course, he won't like any of my music, either, so maybe we'll just have to turn off the radio and talk or something. Could be interesting.

I also like to scan the radio stations during my ride up. I always seem to tune in that NPR Car Talk show, I like that one.

If you start feeling a little drowsy, get a cup of coffee and put on the Bottle Rockets' "Coffee Monkey" & turn it up loud. (If I had to drive through IN, i'd also put on their song "Indianapolis" because1) it would seem appropriate and 2) it's a great song.)

Those who have to listen to the radio or an iPod are not comfortable within their own silence and those who can't deal with silence should be ashamed of their reliance on another persons coice to keep them company.

05/26/2010 03:39PM
Pat Metheny Group
Everclear
Beatles
Green day
Steely Dan
Garrison Keillor
When going up on saturday mornings I like NPR.

Quite a sweeping generalization there, chickenman. I don't knock those that prefer silence, and I enjoy silence in moderation as well, but some people (like myself) have a deep seeded connection with the music they like, that they play, and that they grew up around. For some people, music is cathartic. For some it is simply background music to keep them alert on the drive. Whatever our reasons for wanting to listen to music (or play music), they are no less important than your reasons to want silence.

Now, if someone brings a boombox along camping....grrrrrrrrrr

Thanks for the reminder on Dream Theater. I still like Train of Thought best, but Octovarium is good.

I don't think Chickenman meant to be sarcastic ;), I think he just forgot his vow of silence :).
