Went on a walk this morning and found a dozen black morels the first of the season. Going out this afternoon and hoping to score enough to compliment the fresh crappie filets from last nights catch. Spring has spring in southern Illinois

I have so many fond morel memories. I can't wait to get back out in the woods and do some shrooming with my Dad this Spring. He still has the "eye".

These are always a welcome sign of Spring. Like the leaves of fall, the fragrant aroma of early spring in the woods is half the joy of the outdoor experience.

These little jewels always bring a smile to my face. Love to hunt them, love to eat them, love to be in the woods.

Great childhood memories of hunting them in Indiana. Have found they are also abundant here in the mountains of Tennessee. Even found a few in my yard!

We've definitely had warm enough weather to get them popping, but we need some moisture....alot of moisture.

In Minnesota, the morel season usually starts around Mother's Day. Probably earlier this year. Our June Berry bushes are about to bloom. They didn't bloom until late May or early June last year. Never have bloomed earlier than mid-May. So, maybe early morel season if we get moisture.

My late father-in-law said that when you look at your lawn and you think it's almost time to mow it for the first time that you should go look for morels instead. That would be about now here in southern wi. There was some other old rule about when Oak leaves are the size of a mouse ear.......I never had a mouse and an Oak tree lined up at the same time to check that one out.
Early on, stick to south facing hillsides, lighter soils and find some old dead elms.

I love morels, and miss the glory days when I had more time to go, when my boys were small. I used to take my oldest son when he was really small, he could find them better than I could, he was closer to the ground. I guess now, while I'm trout fishing this spring, I should combine it to a trout fishing/mushroom hunting outing.

I thought it read "the leaves the size of a mouse ear bring the spring walleye here". "the waters that is "
