I feel that there are enough of us from this wonderfull site that we could swing a Duluth or Arrowhead wing night.. Is there any interest in this? I was very involved in the first one down in the cities and look at how they have taken off. I am new to Duluth and would love to meet some more people with like interests.
So post up if interested if you got a site you would like to see this at also drop your suggestions.

I will definitely attend a Duluth Wing Nite! Fora location - one that would be near a hotel would be nice and a place that will take reservations. Our Coon Rapids wing -they wouldn't take a reservation and were anxious (that's the impression i got) for us to leave.

Grandma's in Canal Park might be a good option. I'll attend if it works with my travel schedule for work.

I am thinking right now lets shoot for the 17th of April. If we have to we can do it a week early. I do however have guards that weekend and I think I was voulentered for a 5K on Saturday. I am game for having it be the tenth but I may not be my normal self after the run. With that said if that date works better for the masses we will go with it. So pick between the 17th or the 10th of April.

Buffalo Wild Wings is opening sometime around now. To my understanding it is supoosed to be a huge store, and I havn't had better wings anywhere, and I have eatne way more than my share of wings. If I'm able, Ill come.

Since Chilly didn't know where Duluth was, I figured it might be a good idea for him to take the "scenic route" so he would know where the other towns were, too. Just trying to be helpful...

Anyone with any heartburn about the 16th???
It looks like we can make it for the 16th right now. Lets vote brewhouse of the new buffalo wild wings...
And if the brewhouse takes reservations how many do we need to have to get the party room

I have to meet with the gallery before my May show so maybe I can kill two birds with one stone and swing the Duluth wing night. Maybe even get my husband to come with. Dogwood girl, it would be fun to see you again.

Well the 16th forsure then... Lets hash out some locations we are looking at two different places right now the brewhouse my concern there would be the limited choices of drink or do they have a full bar? BWW is that going to be to loud of a location for good conversation and so on?

Do we want to look at the grandmas up by the mall?? That is a thought I went by buffalo wild wings last night and it was standing room only. I wonder if the crowds will die down shortly. Any other suggestions

Only reason...I'm flying in that day and have things set up to stay a nite and a wing night would be perfect to meet some of you! Lets see what happens...or perhaps the 16th, 17th or 18th.....

Trying to find a spot for us on a Friday night is going to difficult. The Hammond Steakhouse is a great place for an event like this with banquet rooms available. After a proper dinner and drinks it is a great place to start exploring either city for an evening. Plus everyone can stock up on Everclear for der trip while we're der! Just tossing ideas out der. I won't be going over the bridge till the smoke clears out. And even then its quite a drive for wings that would be hard pressed to be as good as my Duluth wing places.

Just a suggestion for restaurants: Grandmas Sports Garden on Channel Park (not the adjacent original Grandma's) has an upstairs banquet room that can hold a large group. I've attended parties there prior to hockey games on Friday and Saturday nights. They have a full bar and we normally order a continuous supply of pizzas and salad, but I'm sure they would supply any wings or other food you needed. It works well because you are separated from the main dining area and can move around and communicate with the group.

Well I spoke to Bill from the Miller Hill Mall Grandma's and yes he is a paddler and I think he may become a new member to this site...
BUT
The big news is its locked in
We have a reservation for Trent at the Miller Hill Grandma's Resturant for April 16th at 7:00 PM he has us down for 15 right now but I have a hunch he will be monitoring this now.. Cant wait to see you all there.

How about having it in Canal Park which is a much better location than the mall area which is way out of the way. I would suggest the Saratoga as they have live jazz from 3-7pm daily. They have a great selection of beers and I have had food delivered there many times. Just a thought.
03/31/2010 05:21PM
I agree Moss, the Mall area is many miles from just about anything and might paint us into a corner. I called and the Grandmas up der rarely if ever stays open past midnight. For the fisherman in the group, the Fishing off the pier on the Lift Bridge is great that time of year as well so I think we should reconsider Canal Park for many different reasons.

quote saga: "The manager at Grandma's by the mall is a paddler."
This is what caused me to call up to this grandma's.. Bill seemed very friendly and eager to help our group out. It is still two weeks away and if someone else would like to make a few phone calls and see if we can get a reservation then by all means feel free. I mean that with no sarcasim what so ever I am open to anything. I tried to get a hold of the sports garden down in cannel park and was unable to get in touch with anyone. I understand that up by the mall it was just my thought that these establishments may be a little more accomidating to a little larger of a crowd. Please feel free but lets make up our mind within the next couple of days. It truly is hard to plan something like this because you want to be able to include as many people as possible as well as ensuring they enjoy the location. Like I said please please please help me out here.

I made a reservation for 15ish people at Old Chicago in Canal Park for 6:30pm that can be canceled at anytime. They have great wings and over 100 different kinds of beer! OldChicago

I like the idea of G-mas by the mall. My wife's pregnant and I am taking a trip in May and June, so I may or may not be able to come, I'm trying to do nice things for her so she doesn't change the locks while I'm up there. If I'm able to go, I don't plan on staying out super late, so it closing at midnight is no problem to me.

I have no problem with Old Chicago I understand if people are going to be traveling a little ways they would sooner be down in Cannel park.. These things are kinda hard to plan and to please everyone and I have no hard feelings with others voicing their ideas. So lets all go drink eat and be merry..
So we will meet at old chicago at 6:30.

I am the other half to Sotaman's 2 (his wife). When he told me that we were going to be at the Grandama's by Miller Hill mall I thought it would work out perfect, since I work up in the area and don't get done until 6:15 on the evening of the 16th. Now I missed out on the first wing night because of work conflict, and now if we have it down in canal park it looks as though I would be very fashionably late. I also thought that Grandma's by the mall was a better choice because of general parking and the manager up there a paddler himself. I know that Sotaman has felt very conflicted about all of this, trying to put it together and make the masses happy. I would really like to attend this one and meet everyone, especially since he talks about this all of the time, loves to do things like this, and has turned several new people to this website. I'm not trying to be difficult, but if the majority don't want it to be up at Grandma's can we change the reservation to a later time?? Sotaman is feeling kinda bad, wanting to make everyone happy with time and location, and it seems like half want to be up on the hill and the other half wanting to be down in the canal. We are really hoping that this can be the first of many wing nights up here in Duluth, so with that being said, with all of the options and places to be here in Duluth, if we don't go to one place this time, we can definately go the next time =)

Hi all just got some big news...
There will be some BWCA.COM goodies to be shared.
Is it all right with everyone if we move it back to Grandma's on the hill or at least to seven at old Chicago lets get this squared away today if possible.. Chilly really waiting to see what you have to say. I hope to hear from you soon. Sorry everyone this is getting to confusing. I have tried very hard to make the masses happy and rereading the thread it looks like it really is six to one and half doozen the other way. I guess I would prefer for us to go to Grandmas just seems like it will be a better place to me.
So with that said one vote Grandmas at seven on the 16th lets hear it.

I changed the time to 7pm at Old Chicago and it can be canceled at any time. I only made it as an option for us to possibly use if we wanted. I thought G-mas on top of the hill would literally be painting us into a corner if for some reason we wanted to go somewhere else before the night was over because it is many miles from anything (even good hotels). I have never been to a wing night and don't even know what they are and how long they last. About being late-Heck, I won't be able to make it till 9pm so I hope this is a wing night not a wing dinner. There are many different hotels, shops, restaurants, bars, and ext that we can safely walk to from Canal Park, plus we could curse at the boats as they pass under the lift bridge while fishing if we wanted. Walking out on the pier at sundown is a beautiful thing to do and it's one of the many things we could add to the night down on canal park.
I was just trying to help prevent us from having a short, confined night but if that's what everyone wants then let's go for it. Please don't plan this thing around me or think I'm trying to step on some toes. Like I said, I just wanted to give an option, if you want to use it, go for it. If not, no big deal, just Wing-it at G-mas.

I vote for G-mas on the hill.
I think the issue here, is the people from Duluth, compared to the people who are driving to Duluth for this. I am from Duluth and as such, see the Lake and visit Canal Park whenever, and avoid it like the plauge on weekends when I know it will be busy (understatement). I imagine that someone driving to Duluth from farther away, doesn't see the Lake or Canal a lot and doesn't have the chance to visit them on the non weekends and therefor wants to see them. I think that from the inside of a bar you can't see the Lake anyways so we might as well, eat, meat, drink, and be merry where it will be a lot less busy and there is plenty of parking up on the Hill. People can visit the Lake, and/or Canal Park before or after and they can deal with the parking.

One more vote here for G-mas. I REALLY don't want to deal with the parking down there at 6:30 on a Friday night. I will, however, go to Old Chicago if that is the consensus.

I 100% agree with BearDown, and being new to Duluth still, I can see the appeal to Canal Park, especially for those traveling. I am indifferent about where we go, it is a difficult decision to make at this time, like Sotaman said 6 to 1 and half dozen the other. So I will just go with my husband, making the best of the night, eating, drinking, and being merry. But I think a decision needs to be made so that everyone ends up at the right place and the right time. I do want to thank him for putting this together.

Sotaman & Maid Marian, don't forget to bring your 'neat' BWCA bottle holders to the gig!
Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

I feel it is best to have the wing night at Grandmas on the Hill. The reason I am going with this is because I believe the parking will be better and it will allow for us to be in a better environment to meet everyone and move around to talk and meet fellow paddlers. I understand the appeal to Canal Park especially for those of you that may need lodging. There is a very nice comfort inn and suites close to grandmas. I hope the confusion and the back and forth does not deter anyone from coming. I am very excited to meet you all next week and knock a couple back and really get excited for the upcoming paddling season.
