Entering Mudro Lake on 5/30. This will be my son and myself's fifth trip. However, it will be my dad's first. Looking at doing the loop through Horse, up to Basswood, Crooked and back down south.

My grandparents camped on Knife a long, long, time ago. This will make it official. Four generations! Can't wait.

I've done the loop from Mudro to Horse to the Basswood river, across Crooked, down Friday bay and back through Boot and Fourtown. Our trip was basically the same date as yours. It was very enjoyable.

I made that same trip several years ago except I went through Moosecamp to Fourtown. I wouldn't suggest that leg of the trip. Go the way 2807 went. It should be very enjoyable and there's lots to see -- pictos, table rock, water falls, etc.!

A Four generation trips will be very special. We did a three generation trip last summer from South Lake to Duncan Lake. It was a great time and the kids will have lasting memories of the trip. Have a great time on your trip.

Spanka, sounds great. I never took my Dad...though he was too out of shape and heavy, but now I regret not choosing a route just for him. Now I can't wait to get my daughter and her two girls up here...my daughter has done over a dozen trips, but her kids have done none...Yet! Grandpa will pull strings to get them here.

Your dad and son (and you) would enjoy knowing more about several of the things they will see. There is an old logging camp on the north end of Horse lake, still with foundations and broken stuff (looks like a meadow). Another on the Horse River, but I never found much stuff byut the open area. Pictographs on Painted Rock just into Crooked Lake, and also voyageurs accounts of Sioux arrows in the crevices. Table Rock farther up Crooked. A good book for some of this is "Portage into the Past" by J. Arnold Bolz...has quotes from the voyageurs' notes.

You didn't say if you would return by way of Thursday Bay and the smaller lakes, or back down Crooked to the Horse River. The smaller lakes route is very pretty, but more work. You don't have to decide until it's time to go, and by then you'll know what the group can handle.

Kevlar,

Thanks for the info. Already started investigating "Portage into the Past". The plan is to do a loop. I'm thinking of heading south through Friday Bay. Looks to be the easiest with the exception of the 300+ rod portage (which I hear isn't that bad).

Actually still putting the returning loop together. I'm currently looking for good fishing and solitude on the way back. Plan is to make it past Basswood Falls the first day. Camp their for two or three days and make our way around Crooked and through Friday Bay. Basically looking for a spot between there and Mudro Lake, so that we can stay a couple more days and then make our way out.

Still researching different options, but always willing to listen to others opinions.

One nice place to stay south of Friday Bay is Moosecamp Lake. This lake gets less use than Gun, Fairy, & Boot and has a couple nice campsites (one on the west end and one on the east end). Going at that time of year taking the Moosecamp River down to Fourtown should not be a problem. Will just have a few (3 or 4) beaver damns to lift over.

Also, that 320 rod portage from Wagosh to Gun is not a tough one, just long.

I can't get my Dad to go with me. He says he likes his bed, shower and flush toilet. He used to go up to Canada fishing every other year but they stayed in a five star resort (company trip). I don't think he knows it's about the wilderness for me. I just want a father/son fishing trip in the remote BW's with him. For all you fathers/sons that do this sort of thing....cherish every minute!
