Are there campsites along the Vermillion River going up to Crane Lake?
That looks like a beautiful, multi-day journey! The BWCAW maps on this site didn't show any.

There are a few on this map:

Thanks Portage Keeper! Has anyone paddled down the Vermillion?

I have one of the leased cabin sites just downstream of Bug Crick. I have paddled it jump shooting for ducks, but most of my time has been in a power boat or snowmobile. Beautiful river, but not very good fishing.

I have, 35 years ago. I've canoes portions of it since. The portion from Lake Vermilion to Hwy 23 is nice, as is the last stretch before you get to Crane Lake. It's a beautiful river, though it's not really wilderness. There won't be a lot of people, though you will pass cabins and see an occasional small motorboat.

Wables, what do you mean "leased cabin site"? Is that land you have leased to build a cabin?

That is correct. My father leased the site in the mid-sixties and put a cabin on it. There are probably 8 or 10 such sites between the Crane and Chipmunk Falls.

Wables, are there still sites available for that purpose? You don't hear much about it anymore.

I have no idea. I know that you can still hand them down, or sell them, but I don't know if there are any available.

Yes, Capt is right. No new leases since 1990. county leases

Wables, how much land do you have in that lease?

02/26/2010 08:42PM
It is roughly 4 acres. Most of the sites are extremely remote. No road access, power, etc.

That sounds perfect, I wish I has something like that!

Wables, do you know if those leases can be sold? In the past, I've seen some for sale but know nothing about how it works.

I believe that they can be sold. I know of one of the cabins that has been sold twice in the past 10 years or so.

If anyone knows of these land leases for sale, please let me know. I think that would be perfect for me....out in the middle of nowhere. You could go anytime of the year and have a solid roof over your head.
