Sunday night showdown!
In the midst of mangy hordes smelling of Molson and garbed in crimson the U.S. mens hockey team will be facing off against our forzen neighbors to the north. In my humble opinion this is as good as the olympics get.
Go U.S.A.
P.S. how many gold medals do the canucks have now......1 isn't it????

I like to go to a fight and watch a game break out. Been some good games on so far. Can't belive I've been getting into the curling so much......I must be getting old.
Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

I was a young lad when the miracle on ice occurred. Can remember it like it was yesterday. People not alive then don't remember all of the Soviet-US tensions off the ice, which made the win more significant. I kind of liked it better when we were the underdog in the Olympics, sending all of our amateurs. Had more of a "pure" feel to it.

whoops.
I actaully thought Canada won its first gold in 2002 at Salt Lake. Just checked and they have 7 starting in 1920. That's all to the good however because like DrN I like the underdog role. You guys are as close as we'll get to what the soviets were like:) It will just make it more fun when we beat you on Sunday!
I grew up in Duluth across the street from a hockey rink. The manager of the rink had a son who was a member of the 1960 team that also won gold. I was 8 years old during the miracle on ice and watched it live. Nothing in sports will ever beat it because the upset was so huge. The ruskies used to put a hurt on the NHL all-star teams on a regular basis back then but a handfull of college kids from Boston, Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota bested them......absolutely unbelievable.
They could have played that game a 100 times and we might have one 2 of them at best ...but like they say that's why you play the game!
Go U.S.A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up playing hockey in White Bear Lake. Went to Ken Yackel's hockey camp several summers. Herb Brooks taught there, Glen Sonmore, Lou Cotroneo. I still skate and play pickup hockey across the street from my house in Saint Paul, where there are a couple of outdooor rinks. The nice thing, they have a Zamboni across the street.

I dont think the average person that didnt follow hockey at all understands how great an upset that was in 1980. The soviet team that year maybe the greatest team ever assembled (EVER) They beat allstar teams from the N H L and really did have some of the greatest players that ever lived. They had beaten the US like 13 to 2 or something like that not long before that game. It was like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kareem, Magic Johnson, and Earl (the pearl) Monroe, playing against the Gophers mens basketball team, and for the U S A to beat those professional players with college players, and then not have a letdown and go take care of business against another really good team in the Gold medal game is to me the greatest achievement Ive ever seen in sports. The only event ive seen at any olympics that even comes close to matching that game was the Michael Phelps led relay team that beat the favored french team, man was that exciting !

That was an unbelievable game. Not quite par to the upset in Lake Placid but probably the next biggest upset in USA hockey. Miller was on top of his game last night for sure. The Canadians could have won by a huge margin if Miller wasn't so good last night. Hopefully he continues his stellar play and the US will have a good shot at a gold medal.

That was one of the best games I have ever watched.
As far as 1980...My brother painted Mike Ramsey's house about 8 years ago. Someone on here said if they played 100 times the US would win twice. Along the same line....My brother didn't want to be a rube and hound Ramsey with questions so he only asked one...."how cool was it!" His answer "pretty cool, if we played them 100 times, we would have beat them once." My brother left it at that.
Fun stuff.
