Last season I took my first winter camping trip.
We camped at a state park campground, with some hiking on the SHT.
This year we're looking for a bit more adventure, and some camping within the BWCA.
Any ideas?
Looking for not "too far in" in case the weather turns. As of now, we're cold tenting.
Looking for lots of daytrip options.
We're willing to go anywhere.

Moon Lake from Clearwater Lake Landing- Deer then Moon. People often Ski the old rail grade, so you do not have to break your own trail the whole way. Moon is a pretty lake in the winter. If you get adventurous then daytrip ski / Bushwack through Ivory and Rocky to the top of Johnson falls then take the lake route (North or South) back to Moon. Done that a few times. Watch for thin spots of ice where Moon Flows into Deer- usually easy to see. Thin spots on the creek as you go to Johnson falls.

I have been on a handful of trips and if I was going to make a suggestion to someone going on their first trip I couldn't think of a better place than Sawbill. As Merlin mentioned the access is plowed and there is a giant parking lot to use so you have no worries there. There are a few different lakes that can be accessed from short portages or you can make day trips to those lakes. Although I have not been there Clearwater appears to be a great place as well as Dan talks about in his post.

If interested, I noticed Sawbill was listed on Snowtrekker's list of places renting their stuff. I've done Eagle Mountain a couple times - not lots of side trips available, but a nice hike in then a nice mountain to climb up and slide down.

I did something similar a couple winters ago, but instead went to Caribou Lake. That was a real easy pull and very pretty. And getting just one portage away was like getting into the the middle of nowhere.

Here's one idea
You could also work in a day trip to Magnetic Rock before/after your trip. (If time allows)

I like both of those ideas! Gosh... watching some Shug videos of him and his winter camping.... anyone else excited for winter to come?
