08/28/2006 08:21PM The shoulder months - of fall and spring feature colder and more variable weather. End of September should put you on peak color, with daytime temps as high as the low 60s and evenings in the 30s. From a practical standpoint you'll pack in more clothing and a heavier sleeping bag, which equals more or bigger packs. BTW - be sure to mouse proof ... and bear proof... your food storage system! All critters are bulking up for the long winter and are happy to lighten your food load. Have a wonderful time! (If you want to start a new thread on this, do so in the trip planning area) |

08/21/2006 12:04AM Hey beemer nice report, i enjoyed reading it, I myself haven't encountered a bear up there like that but it reinsures the importance of hanging your food pack. I am intrigued by reading reports involving snow during the early and late season. I love snow but haven't been given the chance to visit the north country under such conditions. maybe i should have started a new topic on this one but i was just wondering what this time of year typically at the end of sept. offers in terms of scenery and fishing etc...i am interested in hearing what people have to say about visiting the bwca and qeutico during this time of year. 06/03/2006 09:30AM Oh, I absolutely believe there was a bear. It must have been an eerie experience knowing the bear was so close and yet not being able to see him. I wasn't implying that you misplaced the PFD. It's just that, after reading your report, whenever I can't find something I'll be wondering if there's a bear in the bushes. |

06/03/2006 08:17AM No really - I'm pretty sure there was a bear... and the Russian is now convinced that there definately was a bear. (Bears really need to shower in the spring after their long winter's snooze. Phew!) Anyhow I'll look further for the missing PFD when I'm back there in July. |
