Sotaman - you made my day. Happy I could help you take a break from Iraq.

Knife Lake, and Dorothy's spirit, await your safe return.

Wow great report. Forgot I was in Iraq for a minute. I got to tell this story. I wouldn't know who the Root beer lady is if it wasn't for AFN Armed Forces Network it is american TV for us overseas. See its owned by the Government so they cant have commericals so they have informational comercials on here. And wouldn't you know it there is one about Dorthy on it. I haven't been able to see it this time around but when I lived in England in 2000 it was on all the time.

Marc...if you're interested in this route, check out my trip report - "Trip Report - A Week On Knife". Beemer's report also prompted me to want to head into Knife as well. Although I didn't go in the same way he did. Hope your plan's for June work out for you.

Thanks!

Easy to find - on the shore of her Island opposite Robbins Island, right next to where most folks land their canoes when visiting.

Great trip report. It made lunch at work a lot more enjoyable. It also makes me want to get back out. Next summer will get here soon enough. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Wow! "Dorothy's Rock" is a fantastic example of a BIF (banded iron formation)! Great picture--I'll have to scout it out next time I'm in that area!

Thank you for sharing. I have been to South Arm of Knife twice. I really like that area and Eddy Falls. Maybe next year I'll take my wife farther west. I would like to visit Dorthy's Island. There is something special about a solo adventure that I have not been able to explain. Thanks again for sharing...

Good report, Beemer!

Knife is hands-down my favorite lake in the B-dub. That South Arm is especially something else...Eddy Falls...just great.

My buddy and I had the Jeet Boil along this fall and it is indeed a great system for 1 or 2 people. Packs nice and tight. I also have the same GPS unit as you and find it a wonderful "toy" to have along as well as a great way to obtain data for future trips to the same area.

Grits - There is a popular book written by the late Bob Cary, named The Root Beer Lady and available at Piragis and other book sellers. Fun read, and since Cary knew her personally his insights are great.

Enjoyed this report. Wish I knew more about Dorothy, Root Beer lady.
Thanks for taking the time to share.

I just finished your trip report of 06. (..following the root beer lady.) When living in Iowa, my Dad and I did the boundary water trip several times in the early 1960's. Your report refreshed some pleasant memories. Thanks for that. And another thank you for mentioning the Jet Boil. I had never heard of it and now will seek one out to purchase. After all, the sooner one gets their coffee in the morning, the better. (dowelpeg in Colorado.)

Beemer-

Great report. I too had a nice first experience this year with the jet boil. Not too shabby, especially considering how light weight it was.

Its interesting to see just how many people had gone on solo's. I did my first one this year and was very pleased with the experience.

Thanks for the report!

Thanks - I'm glad I didn't go over and start a 'discussion'!

BTW - I'm not a park wilderness 'bigot' - I routinely head out West of Quetico on Canada and have leveraged 5 hp motors to cover the vast distances many times. And frankly this is wilderness out there too... motors, occasional fishing camps and float planes or no.

Just want to see the rules adhered to. Interesting that the FS obeys the 'no motor' rules in the BWCAW, and even had to fight with the Feds to get permission to use chainsaws after the 1999 blowdown.

Might have been me. 07/25/2006 04:17PM
A local fisheries crew was conducting fish surveys during your stay on Knife lake. They were flown in with a canoe and motor by the Forest Service to conduct their surveys. Funny how people become so paranoid about seeing someone using a motor. I've encountered many groups of paddlers and sled dog teams that made more noise than a motor ever could have made.

Nice report, I enjoyed reading it and it give me some incentive to head out on a solo. Thanks also for the tips at the end (thumbs up), nothing like experience as our teacher.

Sorry to hear about the party using a motor at least you did not let it ruin your trip.

Nice report Beemer01. I saw Dorothy in 1977, found my sigature last year at her cabin in Ely, brought back a tear or 2. You gave me an idea to go see her place .
