I have taken several nice trips into Ontario. A few years ago my son and I put in at the end of the Gunflint and paddled to Northern Light Lake in Ontario. It was a great trip and great fishing. There are boats on Northern Light but we didn't see a one in 5 days. We did have to stop and the Canadian Customs cabin and pay a fee to camp on Crown land but it wasn't too much a few years ago. No permit needed for Canada although we did need a permit to put in at the end of the Gunflint. Rules may have changed, that was several years ago.

I have also had several nice trips on Eagle Lake near Dryden. Not a lake without boats but, again, I saw almost no one down in Osbourn Bay.

One really great long trip was on the Grass River in northern Manitoba. Three weeks alone, great fishing.

My first time planning a trip to the Q and I'm already disgruntled.
Thanks for the info.
Was hoping to do a 30+ day route thru BWCA and Q but my consider other option.
Know of any good loop routes NOT in the parks or very little in the two parks?

Glad to read i can leave my french fryer potatoe cooker home, a bit heavy on those long portages anyway.

No new fees but they are asking for two forms of ID for any kids under 16 brought up on a Canadian trip. And a letter from the "other" parent (yes, usually that is Mom), stating that it is okay for the other parent to bring their child across the border.

And I have heard the mention that the U.S. may not be requiring passports this year for people paddling or driving back into the States (but positively you need them to fly back into the States). But that was at a meeting for Quetico here in town and I'm not positive so I won't say anything for sure.

Canada makes for expensive camping esp. in Quetico.

But well worth it IMHO.

Any updates for the 2008 season?
No fresh potatoes are allowed across the border? I will have to change my menu.

So far this is what I have:

Entries with no Customs Station, $18.00 Canadian a night. And the exchange rate is down to about only 20%, quite a change from last year's 30 to 35%.

And they are going to ask for a $100.00 camping fee deposit all around for any Quetico entry. And any changes will incur a $9.00 change fee plus a percentage of the $100 deposit. The percentage depends on how long you have had the permit reserved, ie. 5 months higher fee, 1 month lowest fee.

And cancellations are the percentage plus one night's camping fee for the group. Don't know about you, but I'm going to make all the permits for just 2 people, so the least is charged if a cancellation is made.

I'll have their chart of how the fees go soon. Then I'll post it and the phone number and name of the person they gave us for people to call if they have questions.

Sorry, posted this on trip planning, but thought it belonged here at the Quetico area.

The Quetico is having higher fees for camping ($18.00 night/person Canadian) and camping fee deposits.

I'll get all the correct info and post it in a couple days.

Questions, give us a call if you don't want to wait for the posting
