Clearwater is a great lake & area to explore. There is a great overlook of Mountain heading in the other direction on the border route trail as well. Sounds like it was a good thing you had the motor. We went in through Larch Creek at about the same time. The wind and those gusts were absolutely brutal. Even on small lakes like Larch & Clove. Can't imagine what they were like on Clearwater. TB |

Seems like a great way to bring in creature comforts. And that last attempt to get the motor going was full of suspense. My wife would have been letting me have it. Seems like yours is very understanding. Thanks for the report. |

I must admit that I missed the quietness of canoe travel and we did not see any significant wildlife on the trip, possibly because we were noisier. Also, I missed the excitement of moving from lake to lake. Even on basecamp trips, we make numerous daytrips to explore new territory for fishing or just for fun. The motor permit limits you to only one lake. It was great to have the Border Route Trail right there. It was a great experience to be able to hike in the BWCA and the views were awesome. I can't imagine just sitting around camp all day for 4 days would have been very fun and cruising in the fishing boat gets a bit old after a couple of runs. Maybe if we do it again someday I will plan to tow a canoe so we can still have the best of both worlds. This was also the first trip where I didn't fish at all. It might be worth another trip in early June to see if we could pull out a few lakers but I just had no drive to fish for smallies in August. |

Yeah, couldn't have picked a better time for our first experience with the motor. It got pretty hairy out there... |
