Great trip report! I'm planning my next trip - May 2010 - to go from EP35 (Isabella Lake) to EP32 (S Kawishiwi River), including a loop through the Kawish Triangle. Your report is very informative and it helps me get over my concern about two long back-to-back portages (210 and 170 rods). Normally I'd plan to triple-carry such long ones, but they look pretty easy. Your report also cues me to check out the southern end of Clear Lake carefully in case there's an easier portage than the rock jumble in your photo.
Any other suggestions or helpful hints that weren't in your report?
Thanks,
Koda

Really looking forward to those pics and report. I hope the camera worked well because we just got the SX1 IS a few days ago to finally replace our previous PowerShot that's now submerged somewhere below Cedar Falls in the Flambeau River. I realized a few weeks ago during a short day trip into South Kawishiwi that I really wasn't going to lug around the DSLR on every little day trip.

Thanks for sharing. I covered part of your trip last year and enjoy seeing someone else's views on where I've been. When we left Clear Lake we were using my Voyageur map and had some trouble finding the portage too. Your description of the portage out of Clear is perfect. I always wear shoes with good ankle support and that portage is a good reason why with the rocky footing.
Great pictures.

Pinetree,
The Haystack Rocks are on the North Kawishiwi River, very close to the portage into Clear Lake.

Glad you all liked the report! The camera is - or was - a Canon PowerShot G3. I believe they are now up to the G11, so you can tell it's old. The secret to the photography is taking lots of shots, picking the good - or at least okay - ones, and doing a little editing. With the G3 I found that increasing the contrast during processing was usually a good thing to do to make the pictures mores vivid.
Anyway, that's all history because on the Man Chain trip we just took along a Canon PowerShot SX20 IS. I'm just starting to look at the 1200 photos taken, and they are not all a success, but I'm liking a lot of them. Pictorial trip report coming to a bulletin board near you this winter!
Thanks to Uncle Moose and Heidi for advice on the new camera. You can take better pictures with a DSLR, but this high end point and shoot is easy for idiots like me to use!

Top notch report as usual, Ho Ho (caught the pictures from another site). I think Heidi and I stayed at a nice point campsite right across from the island where you ate lunch on day 2. Beautiful area, as I recall.

That was a super trip report, Lots of pics and lots of info. really enjoyed it.
Everytime I read these I relize just how vast and big the BWCA is and just how little we have all encountered.
Good Job and congratulations on a nice trip

Myself and two friends did the same trip last year. It was awesome. However, the fishing was horrible. Nobody we talked to was catching anything. But it was still a great trip.

Ho Ho,
Great report. It's amazing how many of your pictures are similar to ones I have from a few trips in that area. For example, the "Haystack" rocks.
