We've always gotten our steaks from a local shop before leaving home. They vacuum-pack and freeze them for us, two per pack. They travel well overnight in a cooler and are usually thawed by the second night. The Gunflint does not have options for groceries/meats. Johnson's Grocery in Grand Marais could be an option for steak.

I love supporting the businesses in GM or up the trail, but for steaks I’m with Bobber#3 - buy at home, unwrap, freeze in a ziplock bag. Less potentially bloody packaging that way too. Just rinse out the ziplock after and put in your trash.

Duluth is full of grocery stores for you to pick from. There is a Super One on East Superior St. just before you get to Kitchi Gammi Park if you want to hit one just as you leave Duluth. There is also a Super One in Two Harbors. In Duluth you can always head up the hill to Old Worlds Meats. My buddy buys meats there and it has been fantastic.

B&B Market in Cloquet always has quality meats. If you're getting off of 35 for B&B you might as well go get lunch at Gordy's Hi Hat while you're there.

Duluth has many options. I'll let the current locals chime in, I haven't lived there in 25 years. Otherwise Two Harbors has a Super One (1 block off Hwy. 61) , Silver Bay has a Zup's (2 blocks off Hwy. 61), and Grand Marais has a couple places. Beware the places in Grand Marias tend to have very limited hours and if I recall may even be closed on Sundays. I was caught off guard once. I drive up from Texas also (Dallas) and I stop at Costco or Sam's in the Twin Cities.

Depending on your available space. Buying at home and keeping on dry ice might work. Has been a while since done this but think 10 lbs of dry ice on top in a cooler will keep them frozen rock hard for a couple of days. Just be careful what else you put in with them as anything in the cooler will freeze even if not so before hand.
Assures you have what you want and one more task on the trip eliminated.

My sons and I are making our first trip to the BW and want to eat steak our first night camping. We will be heading out of EP55....driving up from Duluth, so can anyone recommend where to buy steaks off the Gunflint? Is there a decent grocery store in Grand Marais?

I agree with the others. You will have more selection from your local grocery store in Duluth. But, if you want to wait and purchase them up north, the grocery stores in Grand Marais are going to be your only option. Johnson's Foods is the local standard grocery, while Cook County Whole Foods will probably have the steaks you are looking for.

Thanks for the info! We are driving up from the Houston area so purchasing them ahead of time probably isn't the best option for us. Where would y'all recommend in Duluth?
