Which would be the preferred way to crooked? from mudro going into friday bay or going up the horse river towards wednesday bay?

From Mudro to Horse River , DOWNSTREAM to LBFalls, and onto Crooked is easier. Far fewer and easier portages, more paddling. Timewise, probably about the same, although I have always done the loop counterclockwise. I like to do the portaging part of the trip with emptier food packs and a week's tripping experience for the other trippers.

the other way is thru the basswood river, which is really scenic. You can get a tow to back bay, washington island, or, my favorite way, up to goose narrows thru an outfitter like Packsack, located on Fall lake. However, this would need to be a round trip back the same way, unless you put a car at different take out.

As long as the Horse River water level is sufficiently high.

Sounds like you must have gone down the Moosecamp River instead of going Gun-Fairy-Boot-Fourtown...? which is pretty easy portaging.
