I have an EP26 Wood Lake permit for early September and my current plan is to drive up the day before and camp overnight so I can get an early start. Are there any national forest campgrounds near that EP, or other camping options in the area? My preference would be fee-free, but it's not a requirement.
Thanks in advance.

Here is a pretty good list of all the SNF campgrounds and dispersed sites, most of which are fee free. Now whether they are open or not you won't know until you get there. But I don't think they are very well known, except maybe by the locals. Choose an area with several options close to each other and you should find something. After all, you just need a good nights sleep right? If it's a cool spot that's a bonus.

There’s Fall Lake campground as mentioned previously…or you can pitch a tent and disperse camp at the Lake County Yard Waste site on the Fernberg Road. It’s just a few miles from Wood Lake and of course it’s free. I’ve seen my fair share of penny pinchers go that route.

There are 4 back country campsites on Tofte Lake. Sites provide fire rings, tent pads, and latrines. Fees: None required.
