Anyone ever look into the Yeti coolers? They are supposedly bearproof, and will keep ice for 5 days. They are pricy, but look amazing!

I'd go with the blue barrel, but that's just me.

CanoeKev, are we comparing them for "bear-proofness?" I had a five gallon bucket with a gamma-type lid and the bear just ripped a hole in the side of the bucket. (I now use a blue barrel with the clamp on lid, but I wouldn't bet it's "bear proof." --Goose

Anyone have any comparison between these two products? It seems that the poly barrel would be almost indestructible, but I'M not so sure about the Vittles Vault, although I like the square shape much better -- more efficient use of space. Also, anyone have any thoughts about the Band clamp on the barrel vs the Gamma Seal on the VV?

I did see that, and actually that is what got me interested in the Vittles Vault. I plan to use a harness though. Still have some doubts about the V-V durability or the possibility of shattering if dropped.

Here's the blue barrel in all it's glory. I think Guts is just tired of posting it and is too busy getting ready to trip.

Fishguts have a great and safe trip brother.

I went with vittles vault. It won't stop a bear, but it is sturdy and will keep out the real bad varmints, squirrels and such.

No. I realize neither is bear proof. I just want to know what happens if I drop it fully loaded on a rock.

The quality of these coolers is pretty impressive but unless you are base camping, they are not the easiest thing to portage.

Vittles Vault are just as durable as the blue barrels. I've used both and now just have a vittles vault.

That is not the same Blue Barrel.
