I keep a knife and compass in my PFD. In canoe country you do not need much more to get you out of trouble.

Emergency whistle, small metal mirror, multi-tool knife, bear spray, extra lighter and matches in waterproof container, a small amount of tissues in a sandwich sized Ziploc, candle stub, extra compass, and small first aid kit.

Knife, Compass, First aid kit, Dry wool socks (for some reason...), 4 granola bars, fire starter (magnesium and flint as well as a ball of dryer lint), flashlight, lighter
