Ha - Yesterday while changing line on four reels, I had the same thought as leaving a backer, and then immediately had the thought of...to what save a few bucks a year. I still might do it someday, maybe when i retire and have more time on my hands.

I replaced my mono with braided line several years ago. I now replace the braid about every 5 years. It's nice to make that first cast of the year and have no loops in the line. Braided line just lays out flat. It can also be stronger for the same diameter which means I can either use smaller diameter line or use a higher strength line. I usually go for the higher strength so I can pull the hook off a stick or bring the stick up to remove the hook. Be careful doing this as the braided line can cut right into your fingers. I wrap the line a few times around the canoe paddle shaft to get extra pull without cutting myself.

How often do you change the mono on your reel?

Crappiekillah - Who else fishes for carp? I do. Carp on a fly rod are a blast. (Bravo on the username)

Braid I leave on until it really shows some wear, then I spool it on in reverse and get a few more years outta it.
Mono I usually replace after a year or when spool gets low.Like others i strip off a little more than half and splice with double uni knots.Unless we are talking my ultralight trout rods(cuz they hold so little line to begin with) or my carp rods(which I fish with 6# mono)Those I never splice those cuz carp will rip off 75 yds of line in seconds.
I know,Who fishes for carp?Well this guy right here loves catching river carp, man do they fight on light tackle. It’s a blast!

I change my line before each trip to the BWCA. Strip off about half the spool or more and then add new line. I think of it as fishing insurance at a very low cost. I spend all this money to go up there on everything, why not spend a few extra dollars on one of the more critical pieces to my fishing gear. A fisherman is only as good as his line and the knot he ties. Why risk losing a fish of a lifetime over a few bucks? Learn how to tie a quality knot. It’s the little things that can make a big difference while wilderness fishing. I also take a spare spool of line in case of emergencies.

For me it's going to be several times per year. P-Line CCX Xtra strong in 6 lb is the best!

Once a year or more. If I do some trolling, the line will often get kinked, and I change it out.
