Found and returned - success-the system works

jpboldenow's knee brace - was found and WELY is sending it!

Thanks WELY for their lost and found services and thanks to whoever found the brace, carried it out and dropped it off there.

IN 2007 I lost a small nylon bag with some small plastic worms but more importantly my fishing pliers, both a Rapala brand and also a curved Kelly forceps/hemostat. Almost 100% sure I left it at the campsite on Vernon that abuts the portage to Brule Bay (next to the outlet to Brule with the waterfall...). Fortunately still had the Leatherman (sometimes redundancy is good!). Of all of it, the only thing I really miss is that hemostat for sentimental reasons--came from the UW Hospital OR...

Left behind something good in Friday Bay.

My flask was half full of Kettle One Citron, refreshing in the shade...left sitting on a big boulder (what else), discovered lost when we got to Saturday Bay campsite. This is serious. Very serious...Last Wednesday.

seeing that someone lost a camera made me think of something, not sure if it's a useful idea or not, but I think I'll try it next trip.

print a sheet out with your name / phone / address. Leave the sheet near your computer you unload pictures onto, and take that as the first picture with your digital camera each time you clear the memory card.

If someone finds the camera, the first picture will be your contact information. (if they find the camera at the bottom of the lake they won't be able to read that, but then you won't want it back anyway)

Found - I found a Very nice wedding band. Will only return to the rightful owner. Let me know If you lost one and we will go from there.

PS. - This is for lost and found people. Stop posting worthless messages plz, it makes it hard to use for people that actually lost stuff. Thank you.

The best protocol for found items seems to be the one I learned in kindergarten- finders keepers, losers weepers. Pick it up, post here, talk to people you see on your trip, let the radio station in Ely or GM know what you have, make a good faith effort. If someone gets reunited with their gear, great. If not, chalk it up to experience.

This is really interesting...I just read this forum a few days ago and today at church, I spoke with some friends that were up last year and lost their digital camera. I told them I would post again on here to see if by some crazy circumstance somebody had found it. They went in on EP 30 and went down the south Kawishiwi exiting EP 32. They are not sure where or when they lost it, but may have been on one of the portages or campsite. It was the one and only time their whole family would be up there together and they really are missing the pictures they took. Any possible info would be great! My email is rcde@hickorytech.net

wow, I think picking it up is better then leaving debris in the bwca. How is anyone suppossed to know if your coming back/if you left it and know and or if you just didn't care to return to grab it. Also How long its been there could be a question also.

Found: Two Nalgene water bottles along the portage up to Fishdance. Based on their condition, I'm guessing they were lost just this year (2010). One was blue, the other was different and more likely to have some sentimental value attached to it. Email me if you think they're yours, and describe them as best you can. If yours, we'll figure out a way to get them back to you.

BTW--water levels on lakes One through Four, Hudson, and Insula are really low. I lost count of how many formerly snagged hooks and lures I found on this trip (though none were in any condition making them worth listing here). The low water may be a bear, but it does provide an opportunity to help clean up the shallows. Had the water not been so cold, I would have dove down in one spot to retreive a few old beer cans that were visible on the bottom near the Lake Three-Lake Four passage.

Lost (2006): my desire to give up when things got really hard (i.e., when I broke my leg on the Hudson-Insula portage).

Lost (2007): my fear of really long portages (took the "Stairway to Heaven from Pine across toward West Pike and then east to East Pike just for bragging rights in my group (only two of nine took this route).

Lost (2009): my unlrealistic expectations for getting up to the BWCA as often as I'd like.

Lost (2010): my fear of getting lost on the big lakes (it turns out I'm better with a map than I imagined).

Lost (2010): my fear of leading expeditions, rather than just being a skilled participant (I got my wife in and out in one piece, and left her wanting to schedule another trip).

Lost (2010): any desire to hang a food pack again (I love bear barrels).

Air freshener.
Maybe he put it in his tent when rhe rolled it up and stored it for the winter to get rid of a musty smell. Then when making camp remembered the air freshener was still there.

I made this a sticky topic for now. If you have something you have lost or found post it. If you have found something, you may just want to specify that you have found an item in such in such a place and see if someone comes forward that knows what the actual item specifics to show that it is theirs.

This is a copy from a post I made a few weeks ago. Still no word from the owner...

I found this June 19th on the Misquah-Little Trout portage. It looks like something pretty nice but I do not know much about reels. If anyone lays honest claim to it, I will do my best to get it back to them. Thanks.

Back in 1991, my brother Jeff left his Blueblocker sunglasses sitting in a campsite on Splash Lake. He realized that they were missing after we had travelled through a couple lakes and portages. We decided it was too much to go back for them.

Then, after we got home, we got our photos developed (we used to use real film cameras back then!) and we spotted his sunglasses in a photo leaning next to a tree stump in the grass. Now, every time we go to the Boundary Waters, he asks me if we are near Splash Lake because he wants to go back to see if they are still there. He thinks maybe the grass grew up over them and they are still hidden.

Did anybody find the Blueblockers on a campsite at Splash Lake?

Maybe a long shot--

I've lost a pair of sunglasses and a Swiss army knife over the last few years. The sunglasses fell out of my lap and into the water as I was trying to photograph a loon. They went about 3 feet down and then seemed to hover in the clear water. For a moment, I thought they might actually float back to the surface. Then down they went, disappearing into the deep.

I did find a reel handle, a few jigs and a Christmas tree air freshener on the portage into Birch back in July!

I keep looking at your list and cannot help but wonder why someone needs a Christmas tree freshener among all those pine trees? Does anyone out there have an answer?

Hey Captn Tony, I've been doing some thinking, and I think I figured out the reason for the christmas tree air freshener. He must have taken it there to recharge it. With all those pine trees throwing scent into the air, at least some of it would have to soak back into that air freshener, right?

quote

It would be a nice service for the ranger stations to provide a "lost and found" drop off. Then everyone could be made aware that found items are deposited at the stations, they could check in for their lost items, and the ranger stations could auction off unclaimed items at the end of the year."

I have brought things to the Ranger Station and they told me I couldn't leave it there because then it becomes Government Property. They advised me to take it the WELY radio station.

Lost: About 2 dozen fishing lures, a windlighter, assorted bits of skin and blood and many of my worries over the last 20 years.

Found: assorted fishing gear about 70% was returned, two life jackets, two grates, a paddle, assorted hats, a sandal, in 1994, a stringer with dead fish on it, assorted clothing (nothing interesting), about 6 or 7 Duluth packs of garbage, and my piece of mind.

If it appears freshly dropped on a portage trail, I hang it up at 4-5 feet off the ground, if it appears to have laid a while, I tend to drop it off. Never found anything expensive except fishing gear.

Years ago on Ogish we found 2 large plastic garbage bags full of wet gear; a pillow, a sleeping bag, lots of clothes, books, magazines and other assorted odds and ends. It was soaked, mold was growing in it, and it had the smell which is how we found it. We dried and burned all the paper, dried the gear and clothes and packed it out. It sure did stink. I guess to whoever left it, you're welcome.

Here's a really, really long-shot!!! About 4 years ago while portaging one of the Temperance lakes (north or south), I left behind a real nice Stearns Life Vest with stuff in the pockets, plus a compass attached to the vest. Alongside the vest I forgot my old Bait Canteen full of crawlers. I've checked from time to time with Sawbill Outfitters, but, no luck.

As a FYI for those in the Ely side of the BW....Radio station WELY (94.5) in Ely does an EXCELLENT job of posting personal and emergency message, including info on lost and found items. And, even if you don't having anything to find or lose anything, WELY is a great community and BW resource for local info. You can find them at wely.com.

Someone lost one of our SPOT devices near the north side of Bald Eagle lake, near Gabbro.

So, anyone who may be in the Bald Eagle area, north side near Gabbro, if you find it, could you bring it in or send it to me? He realized that he couldn't find it this morning and is back in Ely now.

The person who lost/misplaced it would appreciate getting refunded for the amount I had to charge him for it and I'd be mighty happy about it too.

While I have no actual expectation of getting it back, I left my Petzl headlight behind a log at the middle camp on Moose lake on 8-10-09. It had brand new lithium batteries in it which should last for quite a long time. If nobody has found it yet it should be behind the log on the left of the tent pad between the cut logs. Works great!

Here's a suggestion. If you find a lost item of any significance, leave a note on the item to this effect:

"Found this sitting here at noon on July 21st. I'm leaving it here in case the owner comes back for it. If you are reading this and more than 24 hours have gone by then please take it and leave a note here explaining where it can be retrieved."

LOST PADDLE on WINCHELL.

A buddy of mine misplaced his wood (blond) bent shaft paddle. He thinks he left it at the campsite on Winchell, or may have left somewhere on the Cliff Lake/Cones portages. He doesn't remember the brand, thought it might be "Bending Branches," but he also said he got it at Fleet Farm whom I'm pretty sure doesn't carry BB. I may be wrong.

HELP! My blue REI stuff sack with the name "Keith" written on it was lost on my way out of the BWCA. My clothes, my book "The Paper Lion", and my hammock were inside the stuff sack. Came out of the BWCA on 8/3/08 at entry point #16 around 12 noon. Started that day at 7am from Lake Agnes site #49, third site on the left from Nina Moose River heading north into Lake Agnes. I think it may have bounced out of the VNO trailer after my group was picked up. A stop was made at entry point #14 to retrieve another canoe before heading back to Ely. I suspect someone in my group didn't synch the Duluth pack properly that morning because two others in my party lost a shoe each. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A few years back I lost a pair of sunglasses right as I was getting out of the canoe at a portage (I can't recall the lake right now). The water where they fell in was quite shallow (about a foot deep), but very muddy and murky. I spent 20 minutes digging around in the mud and scanning the bottom before giving up on the search. Two years later I come back to the same portage when one of my buddies comments that this was the spot where I lost my sunglasses. I laugh and look down into the water and there I see the faint outline of what appears to be two lenses. I reach down, and there are my sunglasses. Amazingly, no one had stepped on them over the years and besides being extremely grimy, none worse for the wear. They now are my lucky sunglasses.

The only problem with the note idea is that most notes won't survive wind and weather, and we potentially end up with little scraps of paper all along the portages. I think the best practice is to pack things out if you can.

Another great idea would be for people to ID their items. Even a set of initials can help. For anything substantial, spending the time to label a tent, guitar case, camera bag, or even a life jacket can save a lot of hassle if the item is found by a trustworthy paddler.

Bruceye, that guitar is kylowater's a fellow forum members guitar. He left it in the hustle and bustle at a portage trying to rush in and meet us on Ima. It's a dean playmate! He traveled back to get it from Ima and you must have already picked it up! He lives in Blaine, MN

Bruceye,

The guitar you found is mine. It's a Dean Playmate 3/4 acoustic guitar. It's not really worth the shipping costs to me, or the drive time either. So i guess it's yours. Do me a favor though next time you find something, leave it there. Whoever left it is probably coming back for it. I carried the canoe on that portage and didn't double check that one of the others in my group grabbed it. I realized I left it there that day and went back for it. It was a rough week without something to strum on.

That brings up an interesting point;

When do you leave something that you found and when do you pack it out with you and try to find the owner. You don't really have any idea if that person is coming back for their property (or even if they know where they left it) and the only way to get it back may be for someone to pack it out.

So...are there certain items you would pack out and certain ones you should leave? Does that break the 'pack it out' rule?

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts. I found a SMALL pack on a portage that I assumed someone didn't even know they were missing so I grabbed it. A guitar, I might leave because someone would realize pretty quick that they left a guitar (I hope) and may go back for that.

Ok folks, an obvious, badly-needed-by-some, brief lesson in possession etiquette from yours truly:

-When you find something of value, or at the least, valuable by your own standards, on the portage, at the camp, in the water or anywhere, you should NOT (leave it there) on the supposition that (whoever left it is probably coming back for it) because (probably) is never the sum of certainty and further more, what is the likelyhood that the next person will be considerate enough to post the missing item on a LOST AND FOUND board?

Kylo,I still have your axe, you left it on the portage near the water on the west entry to Jordan. It was about 3PM wed. 5/26. We exited the following sunday and I posted it the next day here and with a radio station in Ely. I do occasionally make trips to Mpls via 35. Give me your E-mail address and we can arrange to meet in the northern burbs or if you get up this way, drop me a line. My buisiness E-mail is home-werks@centurytel.net

I do believe the best option is to pack found items out, since there's no guarantee the original owner will come back (regardless of how soon thereafter). Some items (e.g., water bottles) won't suffer harm being left in the elements, but others (e.g., electronics, instruments, clothing) will be damaged by exposure to the elements.

While it may be inconvenient to learn that an item that was left behind was picked up by someone else, it's better than portages becoming cluttered with junk that is left in the hope that the original owner will return.

It would be a nice service for the ranger stations to provide a "lost and found" drop off. Then everyone could be made aware that found items are deposited at the stations, they could check in for their lost items, and the ranger stations could auction off unclaimed items at the end of the year.

FOUND: I found this small day pack near the large rock cliff on Stuart (EP#19). It weighs approx 1 or 2 pounds. It contains a small first aid kit, a disposable waterproof camera, some snack bars, a compass, a whistle and a few other emergency items. Nothing of any value and no identification. I left the small pack there thinking that the person might come back for it. Maybe it was a geocaching site even though that would be illegal? It is well hidden, but I took photos of it's exact location. If it is yours or you want to claim it or carry it out then send me an email and I will give you some more specifics.

A Wal-Mart bag with an open and empty can of tuna and a few empty oatmeal packets stuffed in the brush on south side of portage at the Snowbank end of 140 rod portage to Disapointment. Pretty sad. Now it is in my trash can here in the cities if someone wants it back.

They advised me to take it the WELY radio station."

True! WELY broadcasts a couple times a day lost items that have been lost or found.

Lost at Fenske Lake Campground last week (around Aug. 25th): One pair prescription eyeglasses with brown rectangular frames. Weak, nearsighted prescription. Probably on the path down to site 7 or in the site itself. Also lost a spring for our stove in the site, but we bought a new stove, so....

Was spotted by another group on 08-28-2010, but they left it on the portage.

Kendra I lost that pair of glasses when we were out there on the 4th. Luckily I had another pair. Very thoughtful of you to go through all the trouble of packing them out and posting this, thank you. I'll try and get them back when I go up next time.

Lost in the wind: Friday, 9/3/10. Lake 2 or 3.

Favorite hat. All cotton, fishing-hat style. Faded red. Safety pins pinned to the inside.

No value except I liked it a lot....and I hate junking up the wilderness.

Thanks.

Maybe soon it would be a good idea. Like at the end of canoeing season? We still have people going out & reading this forum.

But maybe in November there is a way for Adam to make this section of posting be retitled: 2010 Lost & Found?

Any other ideas? I agree it is getting pretty long.

smaller duluth pack on iron lake side of curtain falls portage. i left it there because i thought there may be a chance you would come back for it. there were very strong winds gusts on iron lake, maybe you were trying to lighten your load for more free board? anyways i hope you had a nice trip.

Would it make sense to archive or delete some of the old messages under this thread? I can see up to six months of "Lost and Found" useful, but beyond that the thread just grows and grows...

I think you're hoping for someone who is more than honest. An honest person might admit they found something on the trail and didn't bother to try finding the owner...

You're hoping that the person who found it believes that "found" does not equate to "transfer of ownership". :-o

I just hope that if I lost something and someone else found it, that they would make a good faith effort to try to return my lost property. Yes it was probably my fault, or someone I was with, for leaving it. But it's not like it has not or could not happen to anyone.

The higher value the item, the more effort I would hope they would put in. But besides the radio station in ely, where else would one go besides here to post 'found' items?

I wonder know how many people that visit the BWCA are also aware/visit of this site and how many people that post here find the owners or their stuff?

I have posted both items I found and never heard a peep. Found a paddle and a small Duluth pack thwart bag with some personal items inside on separate trips. Both are going to serve me well next season.

We'll split it, jwartman59, as I'm certain that a lot of what's out there is mine! Actually, a mask and snorkel is now part of my summer gear while canoe tripping, so I'm slowly replacing what I've lost over the years."

I have found numerous rusty lures via snorkel. It's actually a lot of fun.

quote jwartman59: "lost, a couple hundred dollars worth of fishing lures and tackle. throughout the BWCA and quetico over the past fourty years. if you find something like this it's most likely mine. thanks in advance." Early this past season would have been as good a time as any for finding those old lost lures. My wife and I packed out at least a half dozen lures (or their remains) that we picked up during our trip in May. The water levels were so low that you could see snagged lures in many locations. The water was a bit too cold for me to go in and pull them all up (3-6 feet of water, maybe deeper in some areas), so what we found was along the low-water shoreline.

Think it dropped into the water right at the start of the portage. Has a gray cord on it.

I just got back from our trip yesterday, 7-16-08. Not a big deal but I lost a small wallet size Duluth Pack Zip-up pouch. I used it to keep small items keys, phone, money. In this case I only had my stash of cigars. It was relatively in-expensive so it's not a big deal. However, if anyone found it on a portage it would be greatly appreciated if you contacted me. It was lost on Tuesday 7-15-08 somewhere between Clear Lake and the Kawishiwi river or on one of the river portages, on our return to entry #30.

Lost & found here & on Quiet Journey works!

I posted about a remote for a Nikon & the guy spotted the message and claimed it!

So, you never know, keep posting your lost & found and if you get it back, I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested in knowing. (Right?)
