This is something that I would like to try one day, and I have given it some thought before.

Oil/mess kit
lighter/s
small tackle box
hammock
rain gear
knife/multi-tool
sunscreen/ bug spray
head lamp
stringer
pocket stove
and of coarse a fishing pole

I'd wear a heavy duty army poncho, put a space blanket in my pocket along with a knife and lighter. Then I fill the backpack with food and one good, thick paperback.

Here is my list. I think it would fit in a pack:

- The clothes I was wearing
- Multitool on belt
- Hat
- Knife in pocket
- Lighter in pocket
- Fishing pole (it doesn't count)

Backpack
- Spare lighter/waterproof matches
- Light rain gear
- Headlamp
- Parachute cord
- Hammock shelter (includes bug net and rain fly)
- Good sleeping bag
- Small tackle box
- Tin foil
- Pan for cooking fish
- Bottle of oil
- Pancake batter (doubles as fish batter)
- spork
- Quart Nalgene with survival kit: (space blanket, zip lock bag, waterproof matches, whistle, bandaids, neosporin, compass, small pocket knife, parachute cord)
- Small first aid kit (immodium, ibuprofin, bandaids, neosporin)
- Sun screen
- Small bottle of pure DEET

(I may keep editing/updating my list as other people mention stuff I forgot)

Kanoes,

I'd make it fit but may have to cheat. I could BDB the Nalgene survival kit to the canoe (where it usually is anyway).

But, the sleeping bag may be too much. I might have to strap it to the bottom of the pack...

That's why I'd bring a big paperback. Once you're done reading them, pages can be torn out of the book for other uses. :)

The roughing it thread was interesting. In the past, I did a much easier challenge of going out in the woods with nothing but a bookbag size packpack.

Given the experience on this board, I'd like to pose a question. If you were going in the BW for 7 days and could only take a bookbag worth of stuff, what would you take???

I would probably pack it full of food and booze, then I would sleep in my truck for the week!

I don’t know how “rough” this is… but, I did this overnight at Lake Maria this spring, in a medium-frame backpack.
Subtracting a couple of things from that trip and packing it smaller, I think I could fit this in a book bag.

-the clothes on my back, all synthetic with zip-off pants.
-hat on my head
-sunglasses on my face
-ultralight fishing rod (like he said… doesn’t count).

-gore-tex rain jacket (rolled tightly)
-gore-tex bivy sack (ditto)
-ultralight sleeping bag, 50 degree, in compression bag.
-small, mini-magnum tackle box, which includes small, classic swiss army knife & small stringer
-swiss army knife with pliers (to handle hot stuff, fish hook in mouth…)
-bug juice (clipped to outside of bag)
-small pot with lid and folding handle, 1 qt, I suppose
-micro backpack stove (fits inside the pot)
-small fuel can.
-dehydrated mashed potatoes
-tuna in a pouch
-chicken noodle soup, in pouches (fits inside the pot)
-water bottle (clipped to outside of bag)
-spork (with built-in clip, clipped to outside of bag)
-folding bowl (Orikaso, doubles as cutting board)
-seasoning (fits inside the pot)
-small bottle of oil (in case I actually eat a fish)
-paperback book, something by Steinbeck.
-Bic lighter (fits inside the pot)
-headlamp
-small first aid kit (bandages, ibuprofen, cortisone cream, and not much else)
-caribiner
-rope, parachute cord-like.
-map & compass, in ziploc bag... depending on where I’m going.
-water filter, if it fits; else, boil.
-And yes... rechargeable saws all... if it fits.

Kanoes,

I'd use money if needed to make it fit (I'd buy a very small sleeping bag).

Again, I think my list would fit...
