Good for you, I just finished a book by Richard Louv, “Last child in the Woods” basically it talks about how kids today spend more time in front of a screen and less time outdoors, your son will have a treasure memory of this trip for years to come.

A while back there was a post about bringing kids into the BWCA and everyone's advice was something along the lines of - remember that this is THEIR trip and not yours.

Best advice ever. I took my 69 year old dad and six year old son into Kelly Lake via Baker Lake. It was about an hour or so paddle, one short (10 rod) portage and four days on a great campsite on Kelly Lake. I pretty much let my son help when he wanted, do what he wanted, fish, swim and play when he wanted and we had a wonderful time.

There is nothing like fishing with your young kid from a canoe in the BWCA on a calm evening... watching the eagles, beavers, fish jumping... he didn't even mind the constant cloud of mosquitos in our food, drinks, etc.

So, THANKS! These message boards are excellent.
