I think it's called gunwale pumping.


It looks like fun, but I hope they don't land on one of those slightly hidden car-sized Boulders that lurk just under the surface!

That would be fewer things to deal with at portages.


And yes, gunwale pumping is what we called it back when I was a lifeguard and we'd play with the camp canoes in the evenings. It worked pretty well with the aluminum barges we had. I doubt they had much rocker.

my wife saw a guy doing it solo on the stern of an aluminum canoe showing off to some kids.. OK until he slipped and came down on the stern edge of the canoe doing a number to a couple of his ribs.... Makes it hard to sneeze, laugh, sleep at night for a couple weeks until they begin to heal..........

I saw a guy doing this solo in an aluminum canoe at the Fall Lake landing last week.
