There is just more rehab I need to do. Had a great trip, but I struggled. My shoulder behaved pretty well... But lack of being able to train well enough made it rough. I couldn't even wear my shoulder strap over my shoulder on the way home. Also my portage boots were failing fast. And the encounter was not the canoe for this trip. I failed miserably at weight things. I'm a little embarrassed... But I had a good 17 days otherwise. Magic paddler is a machine out there. He's a super great guy. Almost has me sold on the hammock thing. I'm going back at some point to finish what I started. I refuse to quit all the way.

It is important to listen t your body, and you have nothing to be embarrassed about!

Any time you get to spend out canoeing and in the BWCA is a GOOD time!!!

999 out of 1,000 would not have tried. If you made it 17 days I consider that amazing. Now plan the next trip. You did great.

Sorry it didn't turn out as hoped, but sometimes that's the way it is. Shoulders take a lot of work and a long time. Just keep at it and things will get better, then you can get back out there and finish.

I just haven't had the training time I envisioned for my trip and suspect I'll be somewhat limited too. I'll just have to go with the flow.

What kind of boots and what problem?

Don't get me wrong. I had fun. The challenges were great. I started out the trip with a nice steak. Spent a rainy night in the woods losing said steak. Took a couple days to get over that. And no I wasn't lost out there. :) I was going to try and get away from a medication and that backfired on me too. I had packed for more than me for food and failed to pair it down to just me. So I carried around a lot of extra. Last minute I threw in stuff to try for example utensils and this or that that added weight. Ursacks got a big thumbs up... Bear vaults are too heavy I decided. I just have to lighten up.

And boonie, those were chota Caney fork's. They work good new, but I should have replaced them instead of just having them fixed. I didn't realize also the backs were so worn inside and destroyed the socks I was wearing.

And no doc I won't be there. But on Irvine keep an eye out for a little tent stake.

Sorry that all didn't go well, but sometimes trips just work out that way. And you are right about MP ... something of a dynamo.

So, I guess I'll not be seeing you on the 9th?

good thing you gave it a try otherwise you may of just let things slip and not really taken another trip.after my knee replacement spring of last year i was out in that Fall but did not go far or do much.
however it gave me a taste of what i might be missing if i just took short local trips so i'll be back in a few weeks.
start planning again!

Finding our limits is part of tripping. A wise man respects them and makes needed adjustments. My confidence is boosted that a wise tripper like yourself is still learning. I realized I take a large fuel bottle like for a group and I have a small one that would save lots of space and weight.

It was fun following you on your trip and chatting some, things will be better on your next trip, hot weather always makes it a bigger challenge (especially for me),I'm just glad your shoulder held up, will get together soon.

That's what I don't get. You spent a rainy night in the woods losing your steak? How do you lose a steak?

I am waiting to hear more details. It is hard when the brain says one thing and the body says another. Something we all have to adjust to. Just happy to here you didn't get lost in the night losing those steaks. :-)

Ok, I ate the steak... Got sick in the night. It was coming out rain or shine. You don't need to know the details more than that. It wasn't pretty. Glad I was alone at that point. Not a way to start a trip. You guys crack me up... :) No wolf, bear or anything could get between me and my steak.

But the plan was 28 days total.

He did have a bad shoulder, and probably made the mistake of arm wrestling a Wolf for the steak!!! :)

Sounds very frustrating for you. I feel for you. Last year I had a medical event that required me to leave the Q early and scared the heck out of my traveling companions. Not good, felt embarrassed like you.
The good news? I made some adjustments in my tripping and have had three wonderful trips to the Q this year, including a week solo. I hope to have many, many more----even if I have to keep adjusting.
I wish you the best in your rehab. Hopefully you will be back on the trail soon. Good luck!

17 days is a long trip. That it wasnt 28 ..is it really that much of a disappointment?

You gotta retire and get off this schedule thing!

Ben, I think you need to have ole SunCatcher go with you and take like a 32 pound canoe.... Also, I have lots of Advil and stuff.
We will have lots of FOOD, FOOD is important to ME!
I will make sure your butt gets taken care of.

Welcome home Pal.

Man you got 17 days in the closet place to a paddlers paradise there is, and didn't last the whole 28 days? I would give up my wife for that deal..teehee. You now have a whole year to get that body back in shape and to further plan for the next trip, you can't simply finish the original 28 day trip because that only gives you 11 days and that is not enough. Good to have you back safe and sound??? I've got a mere 2 years before I can even think of planning a trip like this. FRED
