Waaaaaaay back when, there used to be a daily fishing report on an Ely radio station. It always started with a clip of some guy announcing "let's go fishing" and then the sound of an outboard motor heading out. When Mike Somethinoranother still worked at WELY and did the morning show, he would play part of that clip during his weekly gut bucket check. I would love to get a copy of that clip or one of the old reports. I've never received a response from emails to WELY or Mike Whatever. Anyone around here know where I could get something like that?

He left on "not so good" terms with WELY. I wouldn't expect a response any time soon.

Didn't he just starting writing again for the Timberjay?

Once he was let go from WELY he started up his own internet radio station that's in Ely somewhere. I tried listening to his morning show a few times but all he was doing was calling people across the country and giggling with his sidekick. The website is

There are two Mike's being talked about here.

Mike Hillman used to manage WELY, goes by the name of Iron Mike (now Steakhouse Mike), and also writes for the Timber Jay. He is the one of which Trygve speaks.

The second one (the one with the internet radio) is Mike Jankovic. He also used to work for WELY. Runs the Boundary Waters Blues Fest. He is the one of which local paddler speaks.

The fishing show from waaaay back then, was broadcast from Fisherman's Headquarters (now Wintergreen sewing, across from the Ely Steakhouse)

It started out with "let's go fishing", then the outboard. The show was narrated by Eric Rosier (pronounced Rosher) owner of Fisherman's Headquarters, and Judge John "Shammy" Somrock.

They gave away a pound of Arco coffee every week in a drawing of all the fishing entries.

The show, if I recall correctly, was named "Let's Go Fishing" & was a weekly show.

TGO,
Loud and clear. It all makes sense now. I didn't realize Hillman ran the radio station. I also had him seat me at the Steak House recently.

Yeah, he ran WELY after Charles Karault bought it and named Mike manager.
