I just bought the Amore brand of tomato paste in a tube. It's a metal foil tube like toothpaste comes in. Is this legal packaging to take into the BWCA ?

Is it like the foil packaging the tuna comes in? I never thought it would be illegal... It's not a can.

I have brought it on several trips, hope it is legal.

Not a definitive answer...

I would think that if toothpaste tubes are allowed, then the Tomato paste tubes should be as well?

Here is what I read on the subject:

CONTAINERS
Cans and glass bottles are not allowed. Containers of fuel, insect repellent, medicines, personal toilet articles, and other items that are not foods or beverages are the only cans and bottles you may keep in their original containers.
Food may be packaged in plastic containers that must be packed out with you.

AND:

Quetico Park and the BWCA promote no-trace camping. For this reason, no foods packaged in cans or bottles are allowed on your canoe trip."FRESH AND FREEZE_DRIED FOODS PACKAGED IN PLASTIC OR FOIL POUCHES OR CARRIED IN PLASTIC CONTAINERS ARE PERMITTED." Campers are required to bring out all garbage. Do not burn plastic or foil packaging and always leave your campsite cleaner than you found it.

It seems to be about the same language on every website. I believe you are safe.

Question for the ages - is a metal tube a can or a foil pouch?

I'll guess that if you pack it out, you'll be fine, and if you leave it, we'll all turn our backs on you.

IMO a metal tube like this should be considered foil. It's not rigid like a canister.

Tube of toothpaste, ok.
Tube of seam sealer, ok.
Tube of tomato paste, ???

I have taken and used Amore brand paste, it's very good and can be used in a lot of ways, I do prefer powdered (tomato powder) or home dried tomato paste now, but I never worried about the legality of the tube paste.

I think the biggest difference, and why I prefer bringing in tin cans over foil pouches is that the tin cans sink very easy in the lakes where as the foil pouches you need to add rocks and such.

Ever wonder how much liter is on the bottom of the BW lakes? I understand that burning and dumping in the lakes was the preferred method of handling trash back in the 60s. I contributed a Leatherman 2 years ago, and a couple lures last year. I feel so dirty.

I've used the tube tomatos for years. Never considered it could be illegal. Stupid law if it is. It shouldn't take a law degree to visit a wilderness. Nor should you have to fear roving bands of ticket writing rangers. That tomato stuff goes a long way. No way you can use up a whole tube in a week.

I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like victory.

Leave no trace used to mean keep a clean campsite by sinking your cans in the lake. I'll bet there are some interesting things down there.

We use some sort of sqeezable pizza sauce that is in a bottle like katchup. It works great for camping trips and such...even just around the house with little 3 and 4 yr olds running around this place like rabid wolverines taking caffine pills.
