Lately mine has been a Pflueger President 6735 reel spooled with 6 or 8 lb. Trilene XL on a 2 piece 6'6" Pflueger rod. It's an 80 dollar combo - about the most I would invest in a combo for use in the BW. But it's a smooth reel and the rod is sensitive enough.
My work gave me a fishing rod for my 5 year anniversary, it would be about $60 and is a cheapie shimano medium graphite with a sienna reel. Nice and smooth but you can tell it was not built to last a long time. It's my favorite for now and good enough until I can afford to upgrade.

I have 2.....
G.Loomis IMX 6'6 med/heavy with 2000 stradic. 2 spools 10 lb fireline, and 8lb flourocarbon.
G.Loomis Bronzeback 7'2 med/fast with 2000 stradic 2 spools 10 lb fireline and 8 lb flourocarbon.
I am broke so I do not get to experiment...I use a Medium action Ugly Stick Lite 6'6'' rod and a Shakespeare medium action Agility reel spooled with 8LB Triline XL low vis green. I like it.
Wow Izzy I was just looking at buying that same pflueger president combo from bass pro. As a matter of fact they have them on sale right now for 69$. Question Izzy on your set up what kind of line are you using. I was thinking of buying two one medium action and one medium heavy action. Wondering what u have. I was wanting to throw some 1/2 oz crankbaits was wondering about line twist. Any help or advice on this rod and reel combo would be great. Just looking for an all around pole to catch bass, eyes, and pike. Any suggestions that won't brake the bank ?
President 6735. If using 6-8 lb. - on a St. Croix Avid 2 piece 7' ML fast. Often, I use 4-6 lb. Same reel usually or 300X on a Cabelas Gold Label 7' Light Action Rod. The latter is used for crappie, and when you hook a you hook a 4-5 lb. smallie or a 2' wally......it's real fun. Can't believe the rod is still intact.
My favorite combo lately is a shakespeare Agility reel with a 7 foot 6 inch rapala extreme ultralight, very nice rod that I use for everything from road runners to rapalas. It fishes like a medium light and really has alot of shock absorbtion that makes a nice crappie feel like a nice fish but can handle a fish much larger also. p.s. With Trilene xl of course.

It,s at the bottom of Seagull THANKS for reminding me.
After all the hoopla I made I decided to down grade all my gear to about $60 bucks per rod and reel.
I went with Cabela's rods and reels for ease of return or breakage. The reels are made by Pflueger or Daiwa. The rods not sure I have 2 a 6 footer med for top water and crank baits and a 7 footer med light for casting jigs, shaky baits and drop shotting.

Looking forward to trying them out this year.

I know the feeling. The new St. Croix my trip mate broke last year was replaced with an Ugly Stick.

I have used the Mitchell 300XGe series reels for 25 yrs. Rods are Cabelas Tournament Trails rods, depending on the time of year maybe UL, Light or Medium.
These were caught on the UL and Light rods in the fall 2010.

Medium action Ugly Stick with a Garcia Mitchell 300 reel - a classic! Spooled with 8# Trilene XL clear. I also bring along an extra spool of 12# or 14# for chasing down some big Nortons
For Steelhead, bass, etc: -Custom 5'5" Shimano Clarus ultra light with medium fast action mated to a Shimano R2000 Quickfire rear drag with 5 lb Maxima mono line.
For Northern and Lakers: -6'6" Pinnacle Powertip pro Med-heavy mated to a Shimano QuickFire R4000 rear drag with 12 lb mono.
ps: my passenger window shortened the Clarus an inch.

I take a 6'8 St. Croix with a shimano synergy reel. I use 6 lb test line. The rod is med/hvy and can throw any bait I want and has enough finess for jigging and such.
My favorite BW combo has been the Berkley AMP spinning rod coupled with a Shimano Sienna spinning reel. Lots of feel in the rod and tons of bang for your buck in the reel.
Cabela's Tourney Trail rods - IM7's. I think I have four or five of those in the arsenal. Although I have several other brands, I think this is my favorite. I have a shimano reels on them all I believe. Hard to go look as they are all at the lake.
I am currently eyeing the St Croix Avid AVS 70MLF. Been thinking I might try a Pfluegar or Quantum reel on it.

Just bought el presidente combo last month at BPS. Awesome spinning reel. Really smooth and solid. Got the heavier one (8-12 lb). Rigged it up with 10 lb XL as my pike rod. I should go back and get the smaller one and put on some 6 or 8lb for eyes.
The rod was a 7' medium Bass Pro tourney. Pretty nice but don't know how well it works until I hit the water. Right now just annoying the neighbors casting plugs across the street.

Fenwick elite tech walleye 6'6" ml fast, pfleuger supreme xt, 6 lb suffix braid. Everything was bought on sale. If it falls to the bottom of the lake I'll be really bummed. No worries if the rod breaks, warranty covers it. We fish for walleyes, primarily with jigs.

Castaic and G.Loomis jerkbait rod. Really sweet. For BW I like my 2 piece rods, including a Fenwick ml spinning rod/Stradic reel, and a Shimano baitcaster with a nice Shimano reel.
For Crappie, Sand Bass, lite LMB, SMB, walleye, Lakers, Pike, stream LMB, it's my go to: Cabela 6.5in. ML Fish Eagle II, Shimano 2500-sized reel, 2 spools, 6 and 10lb.

I equate favorite with fun to use so it's a St. Croix Premium Casting 7ft. medium heavy fast 1 piece, with an Abu Garcia Royal Express reel. I does not go on every trip but it does put a smile on my face just to toss big spinners and cranks. Catching whatever goes for that type of lure is a blast also!

My faves would be my two St.Croix Premier 6'6" med. two pc. baitcasters with Revo S reels and 10# XL. I got a great deal on the two setups, $350 for both.

It says its an ultralight but it really isnt.,however it really is a great multispecies rod and its cheap .p.s. the rod blank is a dark green.
