How are them little buggers this year? Days before next trip. Anything out of ordinary this season? Head nets and quiet times in the tent? Planning somewhat shallow waters so extra care needs to be taken. All you paddlers give me advise. Thanks.
The following is only a generalization of course, but I just got back from around the Isabella area and points south of there. I found the mosquitoes to be the worst they have been in four years. They started to become very annoying around 7pm in open areas, and were thick during the day while hiking around in the woods. The good news is that the black flies are dying down, and the dragon flies have hatched. Your mileage may vary depending on conditions.
Yes, the skeeters are definitely out this year. However, it was managable. I didn't hide in my tent, though we did break out the headnets and we put a bug net over the latrine at one site.
Was just at Slim. I rarely get bit much (sour blood?), so can't comment there... but I can tell you when breeze was down, moderate amount of bugs hovered around; nothing beyond ordinary. Breeze always fixes everything.
I'm probably too late, the bugs really weren't bad at all around 6/20. I had all our gear permethrin treated and we used about 1/4 of the repellent I packed.

Just got back from the moose/knife/ensign area and the no-see-ums got me bad, one tick on my foot. Note to self, never go into the woods looking for wood in Keens.
Ooooo! just mosquitos? sounds lovely :-) Back in June we had swarms of Black Flys in the sun, Moasquitos in the shade....and No-See-Ums at night....lots of fun!
Back from lovely Temperance River lakes. Head nets were essential at 9pm while cleaning fish in the woods. It was wet and gloomy and skitters had a fun time feasting on poor humans.
