June fly in trip from Lac Le Croix, Iron, Crooked, Horse, Fourtown, and Mudro. Hoping to do it in 5 days. Any suggestions on how to shorten the trip if we run short on time? Or another route that would take the same amount of time with great scenery.... thanks

Shorten it by going south out of Friday Bay, down thru Gun to Fourtown and out to Mudro. All those portages are relatively easy (even the 300 is just long) until you reach the three between Fourtown and Mudro...those are rocky and two are steep. Look at them as penance for taking the easy way in at the start of the trip. Scenery and fishing on that stretch are better than what you would miss on Crooked to Horse River, except no pictographs and no falls.

You could go south out of Iron L. on the Beartrap R. and end up at
Mudro.

Five days should be plenty of time.

Thanks! I've seen that route on my maps but wasn't sure of the 300. I've been through the busy fourtown to mudro portages.....pretty ugly especially when crowded. I did the trip last year but was held up due to low ceilings on the fly in. I was lucky in that I had extra time available but this year I don't have that luxury so I needed some options in case of delays. Got caught out lake with big storm....scary stuff. Ended up taking refuge on an island until it calmed down. I appreciate the help...

Looking at this one on the map...would you take Beartrap R through Thunder, Gull, Gun, Fairy, Boot? Or through Moosecamp?

Is that route less travelled? I would prefer less crowded. I'm taking my son and he is going through a rough spot right now in his life and wanted more than a "float trip" experience for him.

The Beartrap River goes through a PMA - Primitive Management Area - where the portages are unmaintained, so it would probably be a lot tougher go than the other. There's a thread farther down this page about it.

I've done the Le Croix, Iron, Crooked, Friday Bay, Chippewa, Nikki, Wogash, Gun, Fairy and Boot to Fourtown and Mudro. Nothing real difficult. The shortest portage out of Fourtown is probably the hardest, but it's so short it doesn't really matter.
