Given the difficulty of your unknown lake, any chance you'll allow folks to make multiple guesses...I think I know where your nice pictures were taken.

North Temperance? looks to me like the portage between North and South Temperance, so my lake is a guess. South Temperance would be my other guess, but I suppose I can only have one.

Jap (Paulson) Lake is beautiful and the portage to it is long (515 rods). Because of the Ham and Cavity Lake fires the hike is much easier than it was in the past. Awesome views the entire way.
Even if you never do this as a portage, it is a great day hike from Seagull Lake.
I skipped checking out that portage during my trip this past September. It's on my list for my next outing to Seagull. I need to see it because one of my guys has Jap Lake on his 'wish' list. Thanks for the pics :)

Thanks for the pictures Kip. Nice overlook even with the fire having gone through there.

the History of the Jap Lake (aka Paulson Lake) name for enquiring minds.
Jap Lake aka Paulson Lake was originally named for James and Addie Paulson who owned and operated a mine in the area in the late 1800, early 1900's. James and Addie Paulson became JAP (J.A.P.) Lake for their initials. In the early part of this century (around 2002) the DNR ofiicially changed the name to Paulson Lake to be more politically correct and not to imply the lake name was a derogatory term for our friends from the land of the rising sun.
Many maps still have it listed as Jap Lake, but its official name is now Paulson Lake.
Just a little BWCAW trivia for everyone.

Amok, I would highly recommend doing this trip sooner than later before the trees get too high and block the views. It was amazing to me up there--other worldly. The pictures don't do it justice.
Thanks for the suggestion, Kip. I've already decided that for my next solo, I'm going to hit Seagull again. I'm totally into watching the forest regenerate, so it will be really exciting for me to watch the changes going on up there in that area :)
Does anyone know if there are any usable campsites on Paulson? didn't appear to be a lot of standing trees, so would there be any shaded areas on a hot summer day?

From what I could tell the campsites didn't have much for tree cover left. However, I was only standing at the end of the portage and was looking across the lake at them.
Tusc,
Didn't do any fishing, but I hear Jap contains lakers.
