Camp in Ontario. It was a four-week trip. The longest one I've been on yet. I wonder if I can break that record in retirement?

I could have guessed your picture was from the same era even without the date. :) Was that a camp? Did you digitize the picture somehow? I need to do that with my old pics.

One of my favorites.....A much younger Snakecharmer, Mr Barley, and me Sittin by the fire, solving the worlds problems.

For the first one...I should wear my bandana like that next time I'm up there. ;-) Or is it a kerchief, when thus worn?

Is that a tump-line in the 3rd pic?

Spartan1 at the top of High Falls on the Namakan River. July 1971, our first canoe trip. By this time I was deciding that I loved canoe tripping and I wanted to come back to the canoe country. (I searched to find a photo that I had not posted before.)

I believe there is going to be a dam at High Falls soon, if not already, and this beautiful location is not the same anymore. That makes me sad.

I've shared this before but never as a photo contest entry. JD, 1968 between White Iron and Farm Lake.

Just curious, how does the rule "you must be the photographer" apply to this months contest?

It's tough for the young bucks to get so vintage so the 90's will have to do for me this month. Duncan Lake...I think... Not for contest.

I just went on my first BWCA trip in september. It took us 3 years to actually get it together enough to make the trip from West Virginia to the Boundary Waters.
It was the most memorable trip of my life and i got some AWESOME photos while we were there.
I would like to enter one particular photo of a sunrise but i do not want my entry to be out of context with the monthly theme.
Just looking for some advice on when i could enter it.
You can reply to timheater@frontiernet.net
I can send it anytime but would like to get it entered this year if possible.
Thanks.......
PS....We're already laying the plans to go back next year as i imagine a vast majority do after seeing the Boundary Waters for the first time.
It was our "once in a lifetime" trip that i hope to continue for many years to come.

Not for Contest - But a good time to share.

Redcrest Lodge, Jackfish Island, Rainy Lake, International Falls, MN. Unknown year. I came across these and many other photos in an album at a garage sale 30 years ago. I liked the photos of the canoe and boats. I recently donated the album to Koochiching Co. Historical Society.

This picture is a favorite of ours; our trip to Dorothy Molter's Island at her cabin in the Isle of Pines in the BWCAW.

It was September 1979; people in picture in order;

Ruth (Dorothy's sister), me (not a good hair day by any means)
Karyn (my youngest), Dorothy Molter, Amber (my oldest)

No fair, I was born post-vintage:)

10/18/2010 07:41PM
And sometimes the contest subject is fish and we don't fish. ;-)

Life isn't fair, is it? ;-)

10/18/2010 10:16PM
Great picture, TomT - but it makes me kind of nervous after reading the floatplane/hatchet rescue thread!

10/19/2010 06:37PM
I stil have that axe. Actually keep it stored by the furnace just in case of an unwanted intruder.

I find it odd that I only brought the hightops on that trip with no camp shoes. My rationale was probably to save weight. Live and learn.

10/22/2010 01:03PM
kind of a vintage photo scan, my brother soloing rapids on the Bloodvein river, Manitoba. amazingly i convinced him to wear a life vest. this river starts in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park and ends at Lake Winnipeg. This is a dream canoe trip.

I feel It might be easier for you to start fishing then it would be for me to start taking pictures of the 1960's and 1970's;) But your darn right life aint fair, I could tell that by last months photo contest. Good luck everyone I love these photos.

p.s. Anyone have a Delorean for sale?

10/24/2010 12:24PM
You know, Chilly, that's an excellent point! However, I think if we started learning to fish at our age, the chance of us catching a fish worthy of a prize-winning photo is so remote that I won't bring up the subject to Spartan1. (He is the one who is not interested in fishing. I might try it some time, but he has absolutely no interest, and I am sure not going to go to the trouble and expense by myself.)

These photo contests are wonderful. I always look at the ones with the "winter camping" theme and think "I would NEVER do that!" but I love seeing the photos. It is great that we have lots of different interests, ages, abilities, and personalities on this board.

10/24/2010 12:33PM
Hey Spartans, On your next trip you should give me the heads up and I could borrow you all the fishing gear you need. I have tons of extra poles, reels, lures ext. Just a thought.

10/25/2010 10:45AM
Loving the pics. My first trip was 1996... hardly vintage, though I did use a film camera (hahaha). Keep 'em coming!

Summer 1978 - my first BWCA trip
Jeff prepares for our last portage - 513 rods from the Stuart River to the Ely-Buyck Road (Echo Trail)
Gotta love the old portage sign, the well-worn Duluth packs, the Vietnam POW/MIA bracelet, and a grin bigger than those glasses

First off, as a younger individual (not quite 30), I have to say these pictures are great and thank you!

It is amazing to me how much has changed in the last 50 years. Today not many would be caught out in cotton shirts and blue jeans with their Grumman aluminum canoes but most of those pics have at least one "taboo" item.

So once again, thanks for the great pictures!

10/29/2010 04:59PM

Not for contest. Yes, Oxtung, here is polyester stretch pants, cotton sweatshirt, orange waterski belt, and you can't see them but I was wearing a pair of lightweight Keds (no socks) on my feet, too. It is a wonder I survived, eh? But that was almost 40 years ago (1971) and I am not only still living, I am planning a trip next summer.

As you said, aluminum canoe. Borrowed flannel-lined kid's sleeping bag. Blow-up swimming pool air mattress. You didn't even mention the canvas tent. I think I would still go back with all of the old stuff today--but NOT THAT!!

11/01/2010 09:16AM
A few more to share now that the contest is over. Can't remember anymore the website I got these from, somebody here turned me on to it.

Believe this is the north end of White Iron Lake at Silver Rapids.

I think this is the waterfall along 210 rod portage of the North Kawishiwi.

I had a blue/yellow canvas umbrella tent with outer aluminum poles in 1983. I knew I couldn't take it to the BW because of the bulk so I went to Erehwon Mountain store and forked over big dollars for the latest technology in lightweight tents.

It was a Sierra Designs 2 person with a completely netted top. I used that for about 18 years. You can see it in my pic here. Sierra Designs replaced the door zipper for no charge except shipping in 1992. I am sold on them now and got a new model from them in 2008.

Best thing about bojibob's picture ... if you'd have seen it in a different context you'd never know that it was taken, what, just over 30 years ago? I'd bet you could have found three young guys in the BWCA this year who looked just about the same: camo pants, plaid shirts, hiking boots, longish hair ... interesting how some styles keep coming back.
