I would like to trade a '00 Bell North Star - Black Gold w/wood trim and cane seats - made in Minnesota, for a similar vintage Bell North Star in kevlar, w/aluminum trim also made in Minnesota.
Might be a long shot but I figure it's worth asking.

My guess is Portage Keeper would like to drop about 5 lbs of canoe weight.

Because I'm wearing one and I just did....

Mr B is correct. It's all about weight.

I would tend to diet for two weeks to save 5 lbs rather then swap boats...

Shoulders, waist, pack, or food; you are carrying weight.

I respect the concern for savings, but to give up a boat with which I have shared many miles of great paddling for a little over five pounds,

Would I (generally) trade my wife a for a slightly skinny model... ???

i disagree. 5 lbs concentrated on your shoulders is way different than 5 pounds spread out.

Actually, I have only owned the boat for one trip. I was looking for the kevlar model from the start and when this one came up I jumped on it, forgetting that there was the big weight difference (honestly, more like seven pounds). I am always fighting somewhat of a losing battle to shed weight where I REALLY need to. In the meantime, I dump it wherever else I can.

Ahhh, this is a trick question, isn't it?

Joe, I wish I could help you out but I have a Northstar BG with wood gunnels as well.

It's a great boat and I really don't have any room to complain. As a matter of fact, if I don't find a kevlar model, I won't feel bad about it at all. My Magic is kevlar/alum and I love the weight savings in that.

Did you check into buying Alum from Bell? They used to sell them for people who managed some how to bend the old ones.

That'd be fine but that still leaves the extra weight of the black carbon layup.
