Back in the early 2000's, my pup and I went on our second solo trip. We were staying on Horse Lake and the new day had brought a lake of glass and sunshine. I decided to take out that day and stopped at the next campsite over where there was a group of five guys. I told them I was taking out and that I had extra dry ice and bacon, wondering if they wanted it. They said sure but in turn asked for me to change my mind and stay my last night and have dinner with them.

And so back to the other side of the bay I went and set up camp again. That night they treated me to an amazing evening in the BW with a group of gentleman. We enjoyed walleye, potatoes and bacon and a fine choice of red wine. I ran into this group two more times after that. I'll never forget them and I hope that in posting this one of them will see it and write me back. It would be fun to reconnect.

Each time I met them was on Horse Lake and the trips were the last week of May/first week of June.

I know it, they were the sweetest guys and I sure wish I would have stayed in better contact with them. More so than hoping/planning to see them in a year on the same lake. lol Sigh.....whoa is me

I find your story very interesting. June of 2010, our group of six guys found refuge at the island site, which was occupied by a young lady and her pup. Our story differs in that it was an extremely windy day and the brave woman offered to share her site with us (6 guys!).

Of course, the only right thing to do was share in our catch of the day. Wisely, the young lady and her dog took their leave early the next morning before any of us awoke. She saved our lives that day. Anyone in their right mind would not have been on the water in those conditions.

Wait a second, that might be me and you being the group of guys. On my second encounter with the group of guys I was with my new dog Izabel and it was our first solo together. We were on the Island on Horse Lake and I watched this group coming across Horse on a windy day. I knew they were headed my way because they had passed the other sites.

I offered to let them stay at the site because the water was terribly rough and I knew nothing else was available. Plus, I was leaving in the morning anyway. In the morning I got up bright and early and headed out, I figured I better take advantage of the morning calm.

So did this 'lady' have a black and white border collie dog? If so it's you guys that I've been looking for.

That would be so cool.

That's us. I remember the border collie and you solo paddling a
Souris River tandem canoe. That is a lot of boat for anyone to handle solo.

Whenever the subject of canoeing in adverse conditions, we recall your generosity/bravery, allowing us to share your site.

Feel free to email me at the address over my username.

I love this website.

I know the Souris is a lot of canoe for just me and my dog but its all I have, currently I'm saving $ for a solo. I've done a half dozen solos with that and it's not easy but I love that canoe.

Can't believe we connected. So what's my point of this whole discussion thread? I was thinking it would be fun to meet.

What a small world.

Very cool campNgirl. Happy you found your bros. Perhaps this will convince more women that wilderness travel is safe, and we guys are there to help and be helped.

I've gotta say it for all the ladies out there..... Of course you can. Can what? Anything. I'm not a big beastly gal and I didn't grow up in the north woods but if you have the desire and knowledge you can do it. When I'm solo I'm slower but it doesn't matter, one foot in front of the other and I get there. Mentally and physically it's a great accomplishment. No matter what, you can. As far as safety? Animals shouldn't be an issue, humans are my concern. Be smart and trust your gut.

Cool story! Glad you could use the site to reconnect! It really does point to the quality of people in the BWCA for the most part, and on this site in particular. Love it!

I'm hoping to have a 'reunion', it'd be fun. I took the plunge and e-mailed iwegean and am hoping they'd be willing. :)

Wonderful story, happy you all were able to reunite. I don't want to hijack this thread, but made me think about a group I met a number of years ago that did me a favor. I might start a new thread to see if I can thank them as well. BW are full of great folks willing that go out of their way to help one another, haven't met a bad apple yet.
