I'm not gonna lie, I live 1100 miles from Ely and I watch the weather every day for 3 weeks before a trip. Other than a general idea of what the max/min temps might be, I'd probably be just as well off playing slot machines. I was on Horseshoe in 2012 when Duluth flooded, rained 12 inches in 3 days, nobody on earth can predict that days in advance. The Weather Channel dot com, Intellicast, Accuweather, it's basically a marginally controlled crapshoot.

I really like weatherunderground for weather forecast in the arrowhead region.

I think a link would be convenient. Now do we need Rely and Grand Marais?

I have it on my phone. Check it before I go and when friends are canoeing.

Probably because no weather website is a sponsor. Just theorizing... I have no inside knowledge of those types of decisions.

Gunflint Trail weather, 32 miles up

Grand Marais and North Shore weather is generally not the same as inland weather. the link above is for 32 miles up the GT, around Trail Center. this is a better indicator of what things will be like in that area.

Grand Marais weather this link shows GM at the bay, at the airport, mid-Trail and Seagull guard station area.

I have always been of the mindset like old_salt: "be prepared." Having said that, for the past few years (ten or so) I have checked Accuweather.com before our trips to the Canoe Country just for the fun of it, usually about two week out and the week before and right before leaving, when I write down their predictions on a slip of paper just to see how close they come.

This year we were in the Grand Marais area for a week with a two-day side trip to Ely in the middle. Accuweather.com was spot on as to sunny days and rainy days, and within just a few degrees--very close--to predicted temperatures every single day! It was remarkable, really, how good a forecast it was. Since it had been, overall, a pleasant forecast with just two days of rain, we were happy with the results.

WIsh it always turned out like that. :-)

We have never taken a weather radio or anything like that on our trips, and just watch the skies for our predictions. Thankfully, we have always managed to remain safe.

I do outdoor art shows for a living and most of the artist depend on 2 sources for up to the minute info. Both have been mentioned........

For long term I like weather underground. Graphics are easy to understand and usually surprisingly accurate.

For impending weather.......like a storm hitting at 12:07 in downtown Colombus Ohio for example........Accuweather is the ticket.

As per a direct link > simple enough to set up and is actually a pretty good idea IMO.

podgeo: NOT a dumb question. Actually, a darn good question. One that most canoeist will refer to when planning to be in the region.
