I carry mine in my 1st Aid kit so it will always be dry. Also, I use a 1/2 used roll and "Flatten" it to take up less space. BTW, I use this "Improved" version of Duct Tape, Gorilla Tape:

+1 - this is the best method I've found for flat-packing it.
Also - I bring Gaffer's tape, rather than duct tape - the difference is Gaffer's tape doesn't leave residue. I have it in all my travel gear.
For instance:
- Hotel room curtains don't fully close? Tape!
- Temporary hanging on wall? Tape!
- Ripped your pants? Tape (it's generally black)

Like Ozarkpaddler, I like Gorilla Tape much better than Duct a Tape. And like the wiseman Old Salt ... When my roll of Gorilla Tape is 1/2 empty I just flatten it out and bring it on canoe trips.
On this years Quetico trip my transducer puck for some reason would not read through the hull of my MN II. One of my buddies came up with the idea of using the handle from my BW Journal Aluminum Fry Pan and attach the puck with a bungee dealie bob and Gorilla Tape the handle to the side of my canoe.
Unbelievably the tape kept the fry pan handle and transducer puck tightly against the side of my canoe for 7 days ... Under water no less. Duct tape would have fallen off after 30 minutes. My depth finder worked perfectly thanks to Gorilla Tape.
Have not found any tape as strong and durable as Gorilla Tape.

Sounds like I need to try Gorilla tape. Thanks.

And I can tell you it's invaluable when you develop a leaky wooden canoe 25 miles from your car.

Have a friend who also packs one of those little teeny tiny "creme brulee" chef torches to "melt" the stickum on the duct tape when temperature is too cold to adhere to the side of the canoe crack......

About 10 ft of camo Gorilla tape around a rubbermaid container I use for my pills/toiletries - stuff that must stay dry.
I think it was 2011 that we punctured our Wenona Champlain on day 2 of a 7 day trip. I was amazed at how well a duct tape patch held for the duration of the trip. It has so many uses.

The guys I met at the Polly end of the portage from Townline while on my solo last month were sure glad that I had some in my pack because they had put a hole in their aluminum canoe when they dropped it on a rock.

Hotel curtains - yep BTDT. Pants also. Gonna try credit card approach... but so far, I bring a small camper's roll made without the center cardboard. Bought at REI years ago and still haven't run out of it. The whole thing is about the size of an old fashioned film canister. For younger paddlers, that means about 1" diameter.

Just cut into a new roll about 1/3rd of an inch and peel off the strip, Foot+ long individual stacked/strips that can be stuck anywhere inside the canoe.
