Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

Observations and turning a little blue yet?"
What lake(s) were you on?"
Mainly the border route- Duncan-Rose-South,but spent a day down by Ram lake and stopped along the road and seen the berries in openings and logging areas.
Didn't check the burn which should be awesome. It started raining very hard that last day.

How was the canoe trip up there? I'd like to know more about Duncan and Rose. Especially the fishing. Thanks.

What part of the Gunflint were you in? (Nevermind, just read one of the replies where you stated your location :))
I was there mid June and was looking for them but didn't see any berry bushes anywhere. Maybe I wasn't looking hard enough, or maybe I didn't recognize them without fruit on them. But my girlfriend and I recall seeing lots of them around basswood lake last year and thought maybe they weren't as abundant in this region. I was on the same lakes as you. I must not have been able to recognize them without ripe fruit on them.
Well I leave in just 12 days for my next trip. Sounds like timing will be just right. ;)

Just returned from Saganagons and the blueberries were all over our island campsite. We were constantly grazing. One morning we picked a bunch and with a little brown sugar I made blueberry syrup for our pancakes. I miss Quetico already.

Not to get off topic but that's the biggest pancake I have ever seen, how did you do that up in the Q? By the way how was Deb? (I'm Northwoodspaddler on Seagull Outfitters' message board)

Just back... (Well riding home with Lindy at the moment)
Blueberry were starting to ripen and we sampled a few. Raspberries were also getting to the sample stage on the way out.

Just all the blue ones I found. So about 1% of the berries.
The camp we stayed at on Polly was packed with them.....green ones...:-(

I use a skillet with folding handle. Rather than try to make several small pancakes in it I just make one big pancake per person. On that particular day we had fried apples to pour over our pancakes, but I couldn't resist gathering enough blueberries to make a pot of syrup to go along with it.
It was good to see Deb again and she's looking great. Always look forward to seeing her. Good to see you hanging around in here.

I swore to my husband that there was a patch of Blueberries on the eastern campsite on Fairy Lake - but he told me no way...

Only if he was already a buttal. (Oh, that was so wrong)

After reading the reports here I headed up with four empty ice-cream pails and intentions of filling them. Well, true, the berries are everywhere, BUT they are tiny and it took me over an hour to pick enough to cover the bottom of one bucket...and in 93 degree heat and humidity I said the heck with it and went swimming instead. A guy with one of those fancy berry pickers could have done much better, but I just use my fingers. Got enough for pancakes and a blueberry shake or two and that's about enough. Maybe they'll be bigger next year I hope..

Came out from Tuscarora 08/01. Lots of raspberries in the burn area, small but plentiful and more coming. Chatted with a guy at Trail Center who was out all day picking a gallon of blueberries. Plentiful but very small with more to ripen. I found patches along the portages and had a total of about 15 - 20 berries. Hiking around my campsite I found patches but they looked like they had been chewed off and only one or two berries were left. I also noticed some service berries but they were not quite ripe, pretty small and hard.

Whats the latest word on the Gunflint?? Anyone been up in the last few days? Was hoping to get their this weekend, talked to Tuscarora and they said they are on the downward slope... so conflicting reports. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it is not super good, but fair number of green ones last week. Farther west by Isabella some were small and kind of dried up.
I know sometimes where a little more moisture present they survive a little better.
Gunflint updates anyone?
