From the Sawbill blog....

7/1/15 - Our good friend, Steve Gendron, lost his dog, Bode, on the portage between Smoke and Burnt Lakes on Monday, June 29th. Bode is recently rescued by the Gendron family, so he is shy and skittish. If you are headed out that way, please keep your eyes peeled. - Bill

poor thing, not much of a rescue

I feel really bad for the dog and owner alike. I'd be sick to my stomach.

I don't know the circumstances of this instance and not trying to pile on, this is more of a general comment for the sake of others, a leash is a wonderful device on portages if the dog isn't trained to heel on command 100% of the time. Both for the dog's sake and other people.

This seems to happen every year unfortunatley. I hope and pray he turns up quickly.

Prayers sent for the lost dog. My stomach sank reading this. Took my dog in May... I can't imagine if I had lost her. so sad and scary.

HOpe they find her. I remember a dog last year was lost near Sawbill and after more than a week, it was found and happily reunited with it's owner

This is why I will never take any of my dogs.

And my dogs are very well trained.

I am very active in dog rescue. And for a dog that has just been "rescued" to be taken to the BW is not a good thing on many levels.

Very sad. I will look at my two and say a prayer for this lost pup.

Sad, to bad the dog wasn't on a leash. The dog probably was just being a dog, exploring and got lost.

So sad. I hope they find the dog too. I just got back from 7 days in Algonquin with my dog. I keep him leashed all the time - he is attached to me on portages and he is either tied, on a leash or in a tent at campsites but accidents can still happen. At one portage I was trying to put the canoe down and had to let go of the leash for 5 seconds so I didn't fall with the canoe ontop of him. He is a good listener but he got confused and moved away from me and I was calling him to come back. I was able to grab him before he got 2 feet away but accidents do happen. I choose to take my dog for the same reasons I choose to go myself - there is risk in all of this but being out there and having him with me is glorious. Hope the dog is found.

Taking a new rescue dog to the BWCA is really not a great idea. In order to take a dog to the BWCA you have to be confident that you know the dogs personality and abilities. You also have to have a rapport with the dog and be confident in its training and your ability to handle the dog. That all takes time to establish and in this case it doesn't like that was case.

I take my dog on most of my trips and worry very little about him but I have also spent years training him and I know what he will and won't do. Of course there is always some risk and dogs are not always going to be 100% predictable but then again the same can be said for humans. There is some risk involved in tripping for each person or dog on the trip. Proper planning and training is about minimizing that risk to an acceptable level. With some dogs the risk level would always be too high, with other dogs the risk level is rather low. No generalizations can be made either way about dogs in the BWCA.

Haven't taken my Chessie to the BWCA yet. Not sure if I would. She is a hunting dog and we'll trained, but still has her weak points. Maybe after a few years of practice at home. Sitting in a canoe for 6 hours is a littler different than the duck blind.
that being said, whenever in unfamiliar territory, she always wears a sheep bell. That sounds carries a long way. I don't leave home without it.

Dog seen, fed, but not caught in the Bdub for a few days. Now has left and last seen on the Sawbill trail.

Per the sawbill blog.

Last year the dog that was lost for a few weeks was lured into an empty tent with food and when the dog entered the tent was closed and the dog was reunited with its family. Cliff note version anyway.

I sure hope this dog is found alive.

Just a happy bump to this thread. If you dont follow the Sawbill Blog, the dog was found on 7/14 way down by Nine Mile Lake and has been reunited with family.

That is truly amazing. One lucky family. And one lucky dog.

Now maybe they can be the family to the dog that they were supposed to. Hopefully a lesson learned.

That's very happy news!

Bode really traveled some serious distance. I wonder how soon he found the road and followed it. Which is probably a good way to get found.

"Curious, was the dog on its way home?"
Moss tent...they are waiting for Bode to get some rest before giving a full statement to the authorities, so you'll have to wait to see where he was headed:)
