Hi everyone! It's been a few years since I have posted here. I miss posting and reading about other's experiences in the BWCA. A few years ago I was involved in a roll over car accident and broke my neck. Luckily through the help of Sister Kinney I can walk again but have balance issues and can't carry a lot of things very far. I want to go up again and will need help.

Can anyone recommend a group that helps people with disabilities go up into the BWCA? I would like to hire maybe a guide and go with my GF instead of a group. I used to go up every May with my kids and miss it so much. Thanks for any suggestions!

Wilderness Inquiry takes hundreds of people a year of all abilities on wilderness trips all over the world, including the BWCA.

+1 These folks have decades of experience and are probably the gold standard when it comes to planning and leading wilderness trips with disabled folks.

I'm glad that your unfortunate accident has not eliminated your desire to get back up to the canoe country! Have fun!

I don't have the ideas if the others but wanted to say that it is nice to see you posting and healed enough to be ready to enjoy the wilderness again. I hep you are able to set up a good trip.

Various outfitters offer guide services and might know if they have a guide who would be a good choice for your trip.

If you would be interested in a trip, I would be more then happy to help you out any way I could. If you don't mind tripping with a 55 year old kid, I might be your man.I would get great pleasure in helping you enjoy the boundary waters. Where would you want to go and when?

Nice offer walllee

The founder and executive director of Wilderness Inquiry was a close high school and college buddy of mine. I went to the BWCA with him on a few occasions way back when the idea of Wilderness Inquiry was but a sparkle in his eye. He has dedicated his life to leading this excellent cause and making it into an internationally known and respected organization.

I was reading old trip reports during Christmas Break and was wondering what had happened to you because I hadn't seen a post from you in a long time. I hope you continue to recover and that you can pull together a great trip.

Nice offer Lee! I will help out and pay the Permit. I also have a SR 18.5 and paddles if a canoe is needed. (I need End of AUG - Early SEP)

I'm sure other people will help make this happen anyway they can.

Ad my name to the list of folks willing to help out. I am planning a spring and fall trip. Maybe if you're wanting to go at the same time. I have no plans yet for where I am going in.

It is awesome that you want to go and that others are willing to help.

If anyone is going they should make sure they have thought this through as many situations as possible..... what to do if a disabled person is in a canoe that capsizes- in shallow water (which may be more of a problem if there is not enough muscle in the group to lift) - in deep water. How does the disabled person use the latrine? etc.

Contacting someone in the above group should be helpful.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi jenrobsdad. I will throw an offer in as well. I would love to help out with this.

I'm a teacher and have most of the summer off. I would be happy to do a trip with you. Also, if you are already planning a trip with another member here and need another guy you can count me in.

I have a lot of quality gear as well; just send me a shot if you need to borrow anything.

I have two short trips planned this spring, but I usually try to get four trips in each summer. Hammer out some dates and let us know.

I would be available to help. I am a retired nurse and a good cook to boot. I would also be willing to be prep-support or on trip help. Someone should start a list and get us organized.

????? Where did my post from this morning go, am I just missing it? I'll type a short version again. Boundary Country Trekking will do guided trips. Proprietors, Ted and Barbara, are great folks and have nice accommodations before and after the trip to. Here's their link:
