I stopped there in late June. They were not really open but were in the process of stocking the shelves. I don't remember the guy I talked to but this was just a few days before Michael Johnson had his accident. I asked if Granite Gear was backing them now and the guy seemed to indicate that was the case. Granite Gear got bought out shortly after that. Did anyone passing by ever stop in this summer?

Thanks for the update. I'll add a stop in Two Harbors to my plans for next year.

Anybody know what kind of tandem Kevlar canoes they rent? I assume they are a permit cooperator...?

Short history, but still a history.

The owners are a young couple...very, very nice people. They started the place right on 61 in an old house in Two Harbors (across from the liquor store).

We'd stop by and chat with them all the time..pet the dogs etc. They moved to Canada about a year ago so he could run another business (a dream job for them). They left Michael in charge of the place (he was the General Manager), and they were in the process of moving the store to the old Sonju building on 61, across from Super One.

He was extremely nice and guided a lot of the trips that they offered. Tragically, Michael was killed earlier this year when a deer ran out in front of his motorcycle on 61 near Larsmont.

They are up and running again. Very nice people who deserve all the support they can get. Stop on in, even if it's just to say hello.

Same thing here. I've been by there 3-4 times this fall at "reasonable" hours, hoping to find them open so I could poke around, but they were closed. Hopefully they can get a normal operation going once again; I know a lot of people would be happy to see such a place in Two Harbors, myself included.

Drove by Sunday around noon and it was closed, same thing Monday.

So did the young couple that went to Canada come back to open and operate the place or do they have someone else doing it now? I think the last time I was there was within a month or two that they were going to Canada. They told me about their moving up there for reasons stated and at that time were going to be closing up shop. I have driven by the new place a few times now the last few months.

Just passed through on TH and Sun. and it was closed both times. That may not be a good sign if they were closed on the very busy MEA weekend.

Closed this last Friday when I went through. You'd think they'd store those canoes on the trailer out front before they grow legs..

Stopped by on Saturday to say hello and see what was up and they were closed.

I sent an e-mail and then called the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce regarding "The Canoeist". The woman said that they have received lots of calls over the last few months about The Canoeist. They were as puzzled as we are regarding whether or not they are in business. They have been unable to locate anyone who says they are the "new" owners. The business is no longer a member of the Chamber of Commerce. They have a name of the guy, who I think owned the house that the business was originally in and initially took over from Mike Keller, but he has not responded to their inquiries.

The new building they are located in is for sale also. Although it's a large building that could have been subdivided.

The website is still active. From Facebook and other canoe sites I see that cards are being charged for web orders and merchandise not forthcoming.
I would be very careful if placing an order by web. It seems that credit card issuers are now involved.

Its a shame, small paddle related businesses need our support yet when they have shoddy business practices everyone loses.

The couple that moved to Canada sold it when they moved to Canada. The new owners also own other small business in the local community. They kept on the General Manager to run the place...when he was killed in the motorcycle accident it left a HUGE hole. This delayed the opening through much of the prime season. I know the owner and he mentioned some of the costs, rental at the building they're in, the utilites, etc. It had to be really tough to make up the revenue of the prime season. Time will tell I guess if they can continue operations.

Wonder what they want for that trailer load of canoes out front? Those things are going to grow legs if they are left there over the winter! I see one on there I'd buy if the price was right and I knew who to ask.
