Im thinking about taking this trip this year. It would be my first time through this route. I had a few questions:
1) (and most importantly) How is the fishing? Ive heard the northern are great. Is this true? Hows the walleye?
2)Is this a very crowded route? I want to go in early September so the crowds should be thinned out anyway i suppose
3)Any other intel i should know about this route

As always thanks to everyone for the input

Agnes is a solid fishing lake, but Iron is generally viewed as one of the best in the BWCA. Nina Moose is just a pass through lake for me.

Theres a ton of info on Iron in May/June. Anyone ever fished it early September?

Iron offers the best fishing IMHO, Agnes is a fine Walleye lake, and so is LLC.

September, you will still see people on the Moose River. Making Iron in a day is quite a hump, I'd do it in two and take the Boulder River route over and fish this as well - but that completely depends on water levels.

I fished All of these lakes a few years ago during the last week of Aug. Last week of Aug should be pretty much the same fishing pattern as the first 10 days of Sept ( in a normal year)

Short story we drilled them! Caught lots of large smallies in Boulder bay, tiger bay, never fail bay and Iron on leeches under a float. Also caught lots of smallies in the late afternoon fishing any down trees in the water. Threw Pop, R's into the downed wood submerged in the water and the smallies would hammer them.

Caught an absolute ton of walleye in Iron fishing mid lake humps in 15-25 feet of water. Find a hump, find the windward side and jig or troll deep cranks.

Take it for what its worth but I have always heard that Iron can be kinda fickle in May/June meaning one day can be super hot and the next slow. An outfitter/guide in Ely told me to fish Iron in late summer and fish the humps for day to day consistent action.

Also, we did well on Agnes also but we fished it after we had already been on Iron and LLC for a week so my opinion of Agnes is a little skewed.

Also don't think for one minute that the crowds will die down in this area in early Sept. There may be a few less people but it will be a constant flow in and out.

This area was spared by the 1999 storm, and the big fires from the last few years. It has Curtain and Rebecca falls, warrior hill and great fishing. People will be there for sure, just not as many family groups and organized groups. Smaller groups like wife/husband combo or a few fishing buddies or a solo is more of what you see.

You know what. Your trip is PRIME. If I were to plan a trip to the Bdubs with the best fishing it would be Iron and Crooked via Agnes (Lac la Croix is good too). Nice abundant walleye, big pike and small mouth. Your going to have a great time.
If your worried about crowds then maybe try crooked. The large island on crooked between Sun and Sat bay with the camp on the east end is one of our favorites. Great firepit with sweeping views and tons of nearby structure for walleye.

I your plan is Tiger bay. The national geopraphic site is on the one on the north end of the smaller island situated at the opening of the the bay. It is superb! Always have got walleye right off the west side of camp. The north end site of the island straight north of this is also very nice but you will be watching motor boats drive by. Tiger bay is popular, and it can get competitive to get a campsite.

Enjoy

Just completed a trip to Iron on memorial day weekend. Day tripped to Saturday Bay - awesome smallmouth fishing!
EP#16 is pretty busy, can get bottle necked on the rivers going in/out.

FYI: if you push it and single portage, we made it from EP#16 to the Bottle Portage in 5 hours and 10 minutes.
So Iron is definitely do-able in a day as long as you single portage.
