I've always wanted to try winter camping so I am going to do it. This is an invite for anyone else on this site to come try it too. This will be held at the same park as the Spring Wing night in Rockford, IL. I am out there many hours during the winter months and would like to stay overnight, so I am inviting any and all of you to come campout with me this winter! I have plenty of fire wood, no drinking water, (well is froze) two out houses, and that is about it. Lets do it!
Nice invite. I don't think I can commit early but I could be a last minute newbie to winter camping. Used my hammock on the porch last year down to about 40.
My WBBB came in yesterday, trying to figure out UQ setup, and maybe sleeping pad for extra insulation. I should have it all figured out by then..... I checked the monthly forecast, and on average its mid 30's during the day and low 20's at night. Hopefully we will have snow again by then. Would make for better pictures!

Dutch oven or two will come along for this one! Barbeque ribs in the DO, and peach cobbler with heavy cream?? MMM, MMM, GOOD" Can we just come down to eat? Heh.
C'mon out C42! It's only an hour or so from your house. We'll have a huge fire. If you use a tent, there is a lot of very nice ground for tent sites. Bob will be testing his new hammock winter gear, as will I. We'll have a great time.
This is basically a drive in campground area in Bob's private park. This is a perfect chance to try something new while having an easy bailout option if things go poorly.
Anyway, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

Having a busy week. This is the address for the park. 6802 42nd st. Rockford,IL 61109. Use google map and it should take you to Cave DR. Turn left (East), and follow the gravel road through the gate. We will be camped where the gravel road ends (About 1/3 mile). Here are a couple pictures from last year.
I took a ride out there this morning. The wind was out of the WSW this morning 15-20 mph and the trees block it pretty good. Here are some pics after getting a 1/2 inch of snow last night.
My nephew says he will come out and camp. I will get out there in a couple weeks and split the wood. Its only 4 weeks away!
Hey Bob, had to decide between Aruba with the wife or winter camping with you? I wanted to go with you, but she thought I should go with her....sorry won't be there. SunCatcher

I am sure that was a tough choice Paul, not sure if you made the right decision or not....Only time will tell!
BTW we have snow here again, doubt there is any of that, in that place called Aruba!
quote jcavenagh: "Shoot! I just got scheduled out of town over that weekend. I'm out. >:-("
Damm, that sucks Jim.
Anyways, I will set up a couple cots in the shed we have out there, with a couple heaters I have for ice fishing just in case anyone gets to cold the night of the campout and needs a warmer spot to sleep. The ten day forecast for the Friday night before is in the mid teens. That way if someone gets to uncomfortable we will have a bailout place for them to spend the night.
I guess we have a major snowstorm coming later this week. I have a guy lined up to clear out the road in and out of the park so we can all get in there. Guess its time to do a head count if anyone from this site is attending? Let me know if your going to be there.

Did you get a UQ with your WBBB or are you trying to McGyver one?
If you are trying to McGyver one... check out this thread and this webpage that talk about using a sleeping bag as a UQ/pod.

I think float is tuffer than you bob,he is a Canadian, and they already know how to handle the cold and snow...He doesnt even require a coat!

I got a little cold, woke up with my sleeping bag laying on ground next to me. Once I was back in it I slept good the rest of the night. Temperature got down to mid teens with windchill in single digits. Float Stanley slept on the picnic table, he was all frosty in the morning!
quote kanoes: "float is livin the life lately. bowling first, then winter camping. my "son" has been seeing it all." I'm not sure anyone really caught this, but I almost killed Float last summer. If he had not been crammed down under all the packs in my trunk, he would have likely sailed off into the woods somewhere along 105 and died a slow lingering death from exposure. Whew!
