Going up the night of Oct. 3rd to Ely was wondering if there was any bait stores that open before 7:00 am, want to get an early start on the 4th. Thanks for the help Housty
We normally close until freeze up after the 1st weekend in October, but should be there by 7 am at that time of year. Please call in advance to see what the shop has on hand. If we're not able to help, I'll send you to a place that can.
Does anybody open before 7:00 am? If somebody would, I would give them some extra money for breakfast or lunch. Thanks, I'm an early bird and would like to get an earlier start.
Kasson Mn about 5 1/2 hours leaving about 11:00 pm the 3rd or early might try to sleep in sub for 2 or 3 hours would like to get minnows by 5:30 or 6:00am so i can be paddling by first light.
Why don't you just buy minnows the day before? Put them on ice in oxygen bags or get a portable aerator ($10) and they will last for a two or three days.
The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese...
quote Jackfish: "Jim, We'll probably stop in to see you on Saturday and pick up some leeches and to buy licenses. You going to be around later in the afternoon?" Not in the afternoon, only from 6-9, or so. Give us a call in advance about the leeches as there are not many around. As of this morning to the best of my knowledge, only two of us had any leeches left in the area.

I'll be there Sat. afternoon also. You better have some leeches left in the special "stash" for bwca.commers like Jackfish and myself :)
quote Bombay: "Why don't you just buy minnows the day before? I would but there are no baits shops close to me and i have to work till 5:30pm and don't really want to drive 2 hours to get them, i will have to start calling around up there and see if some one is open earlier then 7:00 am.
Jackfish and Duckster, I'm heading out fishing now, so will not be around this afternoon. It does not look good for any bulk leeches by the half or full pound, only by the dozen. The leech/bait guy is coming up today but has not called yet, so I'm not counting on this changing. Sorry! :(
I'd recommend getting bait the night before. If you are driving in the middle of the night, Fish lake Bait at the Harris, MN exit (one hour north of the cities) off of I-35 has outdoor, self-serve, on your honor bait. No lie.
Jackfish and Ducky, Left word at the shop to help you two guys out with a half pound of leeches each! No one else will get this royal treatment until later next week, if then! Better not admit being a Packer fan to Brian, or he may rescind the offer! :)
I picked up leeches at VNO Thursday morning. I thought their sign said they open @5am? I'm almost positive we were there before 6am. I could be wrong, but maybe its worth a call.

Thank you so much! That was awesome. Brian must have thought I was Jackfish and gave me the bag of leeches that didn't work. ha ha ha. We had a great week out at Kawishiwi Lodge. The kiddos didn't want to fish as much as they normally do but we still had an awesome time. 7 year old caught her first northern of her life on the first cast of the week and then put her rod down and said "I'm done fishing"... little goof ball.

This weekend they had changed their sign to say open at 6am. They said things are starting to slow down for them. A couple of years ago we bought a used canoe from VNO during the first weekend of Oct. and they didn't open until 7 or maybe even 8. Give them a call or send them an email and ask what their hours will be.
