I had a customer come in today and swear that he has seen Jack rabbits in the BWCA, not once, but twice.

Anyone else?

never in the BWCA, but I see them near my work in Owatonna. They are a rare site these days.
Perhaps when they see a Snowshoe hare they are mistaking that for a Jackrabbit.

This person said that is what he thought when someone in the group said he had seen a Jack rabbit, but then he saw one near the campsite later on. And he said it was not a snowshoe hare, he was sure of that.

Hmmmm, I'm betting it was a Snowshoe Hare. Kinda like when people hear a loon "Wail" and swear it's "Wolves on the hunt" (I took quote from one of Michael Furtman's books).

Gotta be a snowshoe. Jacks are not adapted for the bwca, but more so for the open plains.

I've seen a few jack asses but never a jack rabbit.

I'd bet it was a snow shoe hare as well. Totally wrong habitat for a jack rabbit.

Me too. The scary thing is in about three days on August 2, 1972,I will have graduated 40 years ago. I look back and they were the best of years. Wish I could rewind the clock.Loved those ice cream cones at the Ag building.

Back to the question,no jack rabbits in the BWCA.
Just snowshoe rabbits, unless this warming seasons stuff has finally also moved cotton tail rabbits that far north. I know north central Minnesota cottontail rabbits are common. Back in the 1960's jack rabbits were common in the Brainerd area. I have not seen one now for over 30 years around home. What a shame.

Have any of you locals seen a cotton tail rabbit maybe in town(Ely etc.)?If you have it would be interesting how they actually got started there?

No Jack rabbits but lots of Snowshoe Hares. They were racing through our campsite on Ensign in June. One ran right into our tent in the afternoon.

If it is a Jack, way out of it's range...quite an anomaly. Maybe Sasquatch got a picture(obscure joke!).

We had a snowshoe in camp on Birch lake this past May.

Heard it before seeing it. And, before seeing it, my brother thought it might have been something bigger & darker. :)

As a fellow Jackrabbit alumni myself,I hope they don't classify us as exotics in the BWCA?

Just came out of Cross Bay Lake yesterday. Had a Snowshoe Hare hop right up to us at our site on Long Island - probably been fed before. Had never seen one before now in the BWCA.
