never in the BWCA, but I see them near my work in Owatonna. They are a rare site these days.
Perhaps when they see a Snowshoe hare they are mistaking that for a Jackrabbit.

Hmmmm, I'm betting it was a Snowshoe Hare. Kinda like when people hear a loon "Wail" and swear it's "Wolves on the hunt" (I took quote from one of Michael Furtman's books).

Some people see nature as being made "Just for them", and view others as an invasive species..... We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group worked for their money .. the second group did not.” WTF???

quote VoyageurNorth: "This person said that is what he thought when someone in the group said he had seen a Jack rabbit, but then he saw one near the campsite later on. And he said it was not a snowshoe hare, he was sure of that."
Was there alcohol involved :)
"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after"

Me too. The scary thing is in about three days on August 2, 1972,I will have graduated 40 years ago. I look back and they were the best of years. Wish I could rewind the clock.Loved those ice cream cones at the Ag building.
Back to the question,no jack rabbits in the BWCA.
Just snowshoe rabbits, unless this warming seasons stuff has finally also moved cotton tail rabbits that far north. I know north central Minnesota cottontail rabbits are common. Back in the 1960's jack rabbits were common in the Brainerd area. I have not seen one now for over 30 years around home. What a shame.
Have any of you locals seen a cotton tail rabbit maybe in town(Ely etc.)?If you have it would be interesting how they actually got started there?

when we walk our Collies around South Mpls in the evening a city bunny will get a fast response out of the dogs.up at the camp off the Echo Trail when the Snowshoes came down to the lake for a drink in the AM the dog did a double take..as in.."what the!!!!"...
it's just a level trail thru the woods.
