So we are self outfitting for the first time this year. In the past the outfitter put some frozen steaks in for the first two nights and also puts in some double smoked bacon that can survive longer without refrigeration. Is there a source to buy this in ELY. I have to far to travel to bring it from home.
You can pick up some meat at the grocery, but it won't be froze. Maybe if you call ahead they'll throw it in the freezer. Maybe there's a source for froze meat in Ely but I don't know of it.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like victory.
My group self-outfits food, gear and canoes. However we usually arrive in the area the evening before our trip since several people are coming in from other States. That way everyone is accounted for and well rested for an early morning start to our trip. We rent a cabin for 1 night and it has a freezers so we are able to solve the problem of starting out with frozen meat. Just presenting a relatively low cost option to consider.
We arrived in Ely the day before our trip. We went to Zups and bought ribeye steaks and their fantastic polish sausage, froze it overnight in the VNO bunkhouse fridge and it was delicious on the trip. Cooked semi frozen sausage the first night and cooked the steaks the second night. Aahhhaaa....fresh food.
If you can't find a place to put it in the freezer, you can get some dry ice at Skube's (across from VNO) and pack your stuff in a cooler over night. It'll freeze just fine.
Have a great trip.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.
As the others have said, you can freeze it yourself if you are staying somewhere with a freezer, or bought dry ice.
I also think Zups probably has frozen steaks on hand. The butchers there are helpful. Just ring the bell. Or best yet do call ahead and ask them to keep the number and kind you want frozen for pickup on the date you will be there. I just had some rib eyes from Zup's grilled at the cabin tonight - mmmm good. The New York strip is outstanding too. That's all for splurging, but I think that's what you have in mind for a first night of your trip.
In terms of bacon, Zup's and Northland Market both have pre-cooked bacon from Oscar Meyer and/or Hormel. The stuff is awesome. It's a pound of bacon that has been cooked down to 3 oz. Doesn't need refrigeration, just heat in the skillet till it is sizzling (30 secs?) and serve. Look for it on a rack that is across the aisle from the refrigeration section with the regular bacon.
