I just cancelled a permit for Lizz for July 22. I see its pretty full around that date. If you're looking....it should show up soon.

that's a bummer cowdoc, hope it's nothing too serious.

when do you exit bbrown6057? we enter the 28th after staying in the Rockwood Bunkhouse the 27th. I think I read in another thread you exit the 26th. Would have been cool to run in to you at Rockwood to get an in person trip report. Good luck and have fun.

Hey....no big deal gang. This was a back-up permit. I have some issues here at home and had 2 permits. I was able to use the first and went in at Lizz last week. We had a great week and the issues are still there, but held off. All is fine.....enjoy it if you get it! The fish are biting on Caribou!

We leave the 26th Ducks. Just gonna miss you guys! It would have been cool to meet you after all the help you've given me. Tell you what I can do, I can leave some fishing info with Mike if you like. I'm not that great of a fisherman but I've gotten some tips from the chat room that I'm excited about so let me know if you would like me to do that.

Glad to hear it's nothing major cowdoc. Hopefully it's the same fishing story on Caribou at the end of the month.

bbrown... bummer we'll miss you. I'll take you up on that offer. This trip is a daddy/daughter trip w/ my 7 year old and will only be 3 days so the more help I can get the better. Caribou and Horseshoe are the lakes we'll most likely be fishing. Thank you very much in advance for doing that..........on another note. Have you been reading the blog on Rockwoods website? Looks like a good chance you'll see a bear before you leave the lodge.

Yes I have been keeping up with the blog and I hope the bear is still there. I would love to get some pics of it. Seems he is fond of pancake mix.

I sent you a map in your email and marked the spots I was told about on Caribou and Horseshoe. Cowdoc just got back from fishing on Caribou and had good look in the north little bay across from the island on the west side of the lake. He said there was a log that was submerged in the water and it almost went across that bay. He fished it with leeches and caught several eyes, smallies and northerns there. I think he said he caught like 10-12 fish in about an hour there. He also said if the wind was coming from the east to fish on the west side of the island down by the Meeds portage.

The one spot I have circled on Horseshoe was told to my by someone else and they had pretty good luck there with leeches too. I'll let you know via Mike @ Rockwoods how things went and where we had luck at.

p.s. If you can't access your work email shoot me your home email and I'll send it there for you.

Will be entering Liz on 07/25 with son, daughter-in-law and grandson's (age 11 and 8) who love to fish for 5 day trip. My 11 yr old grandson fishes from sun up to sun down. Staying at Rockwood 07/24. Will be fishing Caribou, Horseshoe, Gaskin, and other nearby lakes. Base camping on one of these lakes. Would you be willing to share with me the fishing spots on Horseshoe and/or Caribou?

bbrown6057: Thank you for sharing fish spots. My 11 year old grandson is a awsome fishing guy - does a lot of fishing with his dad (has caught a lot of fish on big lakes in MN), but out of a 19 foot Lund with 200 Merc horse power moter and lots of gear. This is his first time to BWCA. I have to get him to some good fishing holes or he will never want to go back to BWCA again. So any help you can give me, would be appreciate.

Have you done any fishing on Pillsberry, Allen, Winchell or other nearby lakes. I heard there are some very large northerns on Winchell (if it is not too windy). I was in that area 2 years ago soloing and caught a couple of w on horeshoe, another party got some on Allen and gave me 2. I am attached to Allen, since that is my first name. Not sure where we will basecamp - possibly Gaskin.

Who is mike ? Is that owner of Rockwood OF ?

Yes, Mike is the owner of Rockwoods. The info I'm passing on was given to me by another member who I talk to in chat now and then. He just got back from a trip in that area and was nice enough to fill me in on Caribou Lake. He also said that he heard from other people while out, that the fish were biting on Vista but I didn't get any particulars on that lake so you may want to keep some open time for that lake also.

Oh great.... BigAl's going to be sitting there anchored catching all the fish when I get there.. ha ha. JK. Have a great trip and good luck getting those boys on some fish. If you see a guy and daughter in a Rockwood canoe give us a wave and let us know how the fishing's been.

As bbrown said. Mike is the owner of Rockwood. Great guy and one of my favorite things about being repeat customers is getting the chance to talk with Mike and Lin again.

My wife and I basecamped on Gaskin a few years ago in Aug. I had the best luck w/ walleye in the skinny bay that has the portage from Horseshoe. We did a long day trip through Winchell, Omega, Henson, Pillsbury, Allen. Did some fishing and didn't catch anything but we were only trolling as we were moving along. I loved the fact that nobody was on Pillsbury and Allen. Nice quiet lakes. A buddy spent a few days on Pillsbury last year in Aug. and did well on both walleye and smallies.

That sounds about right for Gaskin,Winchell, Omega, Henson, back to Gaskin at a leisurely pace. (If that's the daytrip you are thinking of doing) You could do it faster without stopping to smell any roses or make it longer by fishing more than we did and stopping to find the waterfall on Winchell and/or climbing to the top of the big cliff on Winchell. We added Pillsbury, Allen, and Jump and did it in about 7-8 hours. We didn't stop for the sights on Winchell, but explored Omega (my fav. lake so far), stopped at a couple campsites to stretch legs/eat lunch, and did just a little bit of fishing.

Just leave me 1 walleye so my daughter can have her first bwca fish fry :)

Omega looks so nice in the photo's I've seen. Maybe if I get to do another trip, I'll be heading that way. Heck I may even ring you up and ask you if you want to go sometime, that is if you don't mind tagging along with a "noob" =)

Heading in on the 26th also with the wife and our 5 year old daughter. This is the daughters first BW trip...pretty pumped! First trip to the Caribou/Horseshoe area and really hoping we get a moose viewing and of course some eater walleyes. 10+ years and I have only got to see a couple of moose. Would be pretty cool to have the daughter see one her first trip!

Would be pretty funny if someone moved that tree. :) Fishing meeting/report at the tree...say around 7pm? :)

We will be in a SR 18.5'.

Magic.... My daughter was 5 on her first trip also and absolutely loved it. She has yet to see a moose and I've only seen 1 in the last 6 years. My wife and I didn't see one when we went through this area a couple years ago. Missed one by a matter of minutes. Someone posted a picture on this site of a moose on Horseshoe and it was taken right before we got there. A moose sighting is high on her "hopes and dreams" for our trip.

A meeting at "the tree" with fellow bwca.commers would be neat. We'll hopefully be fishing there the 28th. We'll be in a wenonah spirit 2 or aluminum with a "rockwood" sticker. Our SR Q 18.5 has to stay home this trip, too much for me to handle w/ just her in the bow.

Have a great trip!

We will be heading out on the 28th but not sure what time yet. Trying to talk the wife into staying until the 29th. I suggested we leave it up to the daughter. :)

Who knows...might cross pathes along the way.

I am looking forward to using the 18.5' for this trip. Despite plenty of planning I somehow lost sight of the fact our trip was coming up in 14-15 days. I was hoping to get the wife and daughter out a few times before the trip but i'm not so sure that will happen. Oh well I guess....learn along the way!

Good luck on your trip also!

I could be at the tree on our way out for a little while. What time you hitting the water Magic?

MagicStik the 18.5 is a great ride especially w/ kiddo along. Having your daughter decide to leave or stay an extra night while you're there sounds like a great idea. Gotta go with the flow with kids on a trip.

My plan is to leave from Rockwood by 6am. It took my wife and I an hour to get to Caribou single portaging so I plan on it taking over 2 hours with my daughter. Hopefully hitting Caribou between 8 and 9 am and then searching for a site.

More than happy to fill you in on campsites if we run into each other. We may be staying on Caribou our last night so we can hit the road back to St Louis early on the 26th. May try for the site right across from the portage from Lizz if it's open. I'll keep a lookout for the guy that has 2 ladies with him =)

How's this for a plan. bbrown gets that site for the 25th and departs it the 26th with MagicStik taking control of it when his family get's there. If MagicStik's wife wins and daughter wants to depart the 28th ducks and his duckling take the site over when they get there. lol :)

Just curious....would this be illegal to do in the BW? Just say you had 3-4 groups one group coming in as the other is going out...is there anything that says the first group couldn't set up camp and the last crew take it down? Set a time and as one group arrives the other it taking off?

My wife and I are heading in through Lizz and hope to basecamp on Vista for the week. But we're not going in until September 9th. This will be our first trip to the BWCA and we are really looking forward to it. Matter of fact, we just had our "planning" talk this morning, where I showed her the map and discussed everything. Hope the fish are biting in September!

quote Jameson: "My wife and I are heading in through Lizz and hope to basecamp on Vista for the week. But we're not going in until September 9th. This will be our first trip to the BWCA and we are really looking forward to it. Matter of fact, we just had our "planning" talk this morning, where I showed her the map and discussed everything. Hope the fish are biting in September!

"

Jameson, keep a lookout for trip reports around the 1st of August or so. 3 of us that I know of will be in that general area and we should all have some pics and fishing reports (or stories, however you want to look at ;-))from that area. I for sure am going to go to Vista, we may try for the south site which I'm sure is the one you are going to be going after. If there is no one there and we happen to get it, I'll make sure and take a lot of photo's of the campsite. A lot of where we end up at depends on our trip partners. If they are tired we'll hole up somewhere on Horseshoe and go from there. Enjoy the planning stages, as that's half the fun!

Brian

Brian...thanks and yeah, we'll be going for that furthest south campsite on Vista. I figure we'll do a lot of fishing on Horseshoe. Enjoy your trip and PLEASE take lots of pictures! Lol!

For those of you traveling this route in the next week or so who've mentioned moose, we've seen them twice on Henson Lake over the past couple of year. Twice we've stayed at campsite 621 on this lake (not a great site, but sometimes there are few options). The first time, we found the jawbone and spinal remains of a moose, and later that evening we saw a cow across the lake in a small bay.

A year later, we were at the same site and my daughter heard something which turned out to be a massive bull swimming across the lake. He ended up right where our canoe was tied, and he stayed there for hours, munching in the water, returning in the morning as well. The photo are fuzzy as we had a cheap point and shoot, but the memories are indelible. Hope you get to see a moose or two; they're my favorite critter to spot in the BW!

BBROWN- Our group is heading in on thursday and leaving sunday, I can leave up to date info( 1 day before you head in) at the lodge if you would like. Our group is thinking about doing the loop but it will depend on how hot it is and how the fish are biting on caribou and horseshoe on the way thru. Any tips on what to bring or where to look? We are thinking about running down the river and seeing what we can find. If we do the loop I plan on really trying for lakers.

Also anyone have a good up to date bug report?

That would be nice maddog! I've been told that going down the river is not a good idea as there is a lot of downed wood along the way and it is very shallow unless they have had some recent rains. The only fishing spots I know of are what I've posted above with leeches. I'm going to leave no stone unturned and catch a walleye come hell or high water!

Have a great trip and I am looking forward to hearing your report from Mike!

I always bring leeches and if we dont end up doing the loop we have thought about spending a day bushwacking to state lake and trying some fishing in there.

Maddog, if you think about it, tell Mike what campsites are open so I have an idea where to look if you don't mind.

How's this for a plan. bbrown gets that site for the 25th and departs it the 26th with MagicStik taking control of it when his family get's there. If MagicStik's wife wins and daughter wants to depart the 28th ducks and his duckling take the site over when they get there. lol :)"

I can't believe it actually happened that way :) It was great meeting you MagicStik. Actually ended up with the 3 sites closest to us all being empty both nights. Kind of shocking for that lake especially this time of year.
