I have a pair of T4's. I work outside so I wear them every day and wash them alot. I wore out the first two and Tilly replaced them for free. I have only had the cotton ones.
The rear bill on the tilley interferes with a hood on a rain jacket. Therefore you have to put the hat over the ood which is not as comfortable, especially when using the chin strap.
The Tilley is realtively hot in warm weather compared to the SA hat.
The SA hat is foldable or at least rollable so it packs better.
Both hats are embarrassing to families, especially teenage daughters. It is a toss up between the two.
The Tilley floats which is an advantage, but I have not lost my hat yet.
quote tonyyarusso: "In addition to model, I see some come in both cotton and nylon versions. Which do you prefer and why?" T4 here in cotton. My biggest problem in the boreal is the sun and heat. In Florida my biggest problem is the sun and heat. I like to be able to soak my hat for thermoregulation. Cotton does not always kill. Sometimes it saves.
If I paddled only where it was cool and drizzly I would not want cotton. I would want nylon. However as I am a gear snot paddling the wet cold Maine coast too but not only I have another hat for gnarly rain..the Kokotat Souwester.
T4 cotton. Brim is just the perfect size. On hot days you dip it in the water and put it back on to stay cool. On cold, rainy days, it's warm and sheds water well. It's durable enough to stand up to pretty much anything, and it floats which is a major advantage when paddling. Have fished mine and others out a few times.

YMMV. One of the things I like about my T4 is that it works great with a hood over it.
