I made my first ever trip through fall lake on June 21st and stayed in 4 days. I loved it! I'll make a trip report and put up photos when I can get to a real computer, but we went from fall lake And camped in jack fish bay, took a day trip to basswood falls and then back.
I am seriously thinking of doing an early fall trip sometime in September. The wind was a big issue on pipestone and jackfish bays, as well as basswood lake. I was thinking that smaller lakes might avoid that problem? Also going in fall lake was nice for the first trip cuz there were plenty of ppl around (as I wanted it) but the next trip I want to be more remote. Also I want to do some bass fishing and northern fishing on the trip. I welcome all suggestions.
Oh and big rocks to climb or cool photo ops would be a plus!
Congrats on you first trip! Sounds like the seed has been firmly planted:). You'll find September is one of the best months to trip. Warm days, cool nights no bigs few people. As far as entry points the Gunflint EPs have great scenery. It's my favorite area
Beave - glad you found the cure for your itch! After Labor Day you are likely to get: no crowds, no bugs, and no 90 degree weather. We've been doing Sept trips for years and even though the fishing isn't as hot as in May/June, everything else makes up for it.
Enjoy planning for your next trip. The BW/Q is a huge expanse - hope you find your piece of heaven on earth...
I saw the title of this post and had to respond. Glad you had a great trip and it sounds like you got the fever! I have less than 2 months til our trip and have been thinking about it for MONTHS. I hate that drive home after coming out of the BWCA. Definitely go back in September! Rock on.....

I hate that drive home after coming out of the BWCA. Definitely go back in September and I suggest going up the Gunflint to Seagull Lake. Take the route up to American Point and down through Ester, Ogishkemuncie, Red Rock and back. Great 6 night route that we did last year. It has everything and tons of scenery. Any questions, just ask. Rock on.....
We've been back three years in a row and since we bought a new used canoe this year (Quetico 17), I guess number four is pretty well in the bag. BWCA is addictive.
I may be the odd guy. By the time I return from a trip...between the 12 hour ride there and the grueling portaging I am ready for a couple months off. I suppose that makes me a lightweight. Anyways, welcome to the ultimate experience. I am an avid hunter but I would still take a bwca trip over a week long hunt.
