That's a terrible disaster. As the climate warms and dries out across the West, and urban areas continue to expand into fire-prone areas, we will likely see more and more of this type of thing. Earlier this spring a similar thing happened in Reno.

Much of this they were afraid of with massive spruce disease dieoff and insects killing them all the way to Alaska because of warmer weather in recent years.
Record heat across much of that area this week.
I see Hill city in Kansas(where ever that is?) had 115 degrees F. yesterday. In the past week, 1,011 records have been broken around the country, including 251 new daily high temperature records on Tuesday.

Hill city is north of I-70 in....well the middle of nowhere. Left KC at 9 yesterday morning and it was sweltering already. Went through manhattan around noon and bank clock said 103. Heat bad enough to warp tracks and cause pretty big derailment in junction city, ks. Forecast looks bad. Now where are those kids who will mow my lawn for 10 bucks....

I leave for Colorado on Saturday for a hiking/camping trip. I really have done very little planning this year, so I'm not sure what we are gonna find.

I have family in Colorado Springs. Not a good situation there for sure. All I can do for them is hope and pray, which is all they can do themselves.

I think my buddy's house near Estes Park may have burned down. I haven't heard from him for a while.

Colorado Springs is a big area for Christian ministries. Navigators is one and they have an update on thier home page http://www.navigators.org/us/. Please remember to keep everyone in your prayers for protection.

My sister and husband live in Ft Collins. They live in town and should be OK, but my sister does lots of hiking and some of her favorite local trails have been destroyed.

Just had an email from my sister in Colorado Springs. She's okay on the east side of the city, but it sounds pretty grim for a lot of the area.

Just read a old article from way back in 2007 about USFS being downsized in firefighting ability and the intent was let the private sector to it for profit. I wonder how that has hurt the infrastructure and ability to fight these fires.

A little update. I just was able to reach my friend in Ft Collins. Thankfully, her and her daughter are well. Heavy smoke, but they are now out of danger. She told me some amazing stories of compassion of people and animals there.

I have not yet found my friend in Colorado Springs. He was a guitar playing partner of mine and joined the Air Force and has been there for many years. I hope he's ok.

This thread got me off my duff to contact my friends. Thank you for that.

At times like these you see many people pull together to help each other and forget differences.
They have a long haul to go and when a lot of people get to go home there home will be gone, lot of sadness ahead.
There always will be chaos in situations like this, but it seems overall organization in trying to deal with it is pretty good. The bottom line the fires will finally go out when mother nature decides it is time.
